Do you know why these names are spelled differently? kollaja and kolaja. I dont. our Kollaja's came from czeh. too. (other names in the kollaja Group are Jistel/zopp from austria-they settled in cameron texas. Michalka --married name--and Kollaja married names... kollaja settled in fayetteville tx.
any name you find with 2 l's are more that likey related. go to www.central-access for Texas records..maybe you can find some Kolaja marriage/death/birth .

I am an American living here in Slovakia, and my family is also from Strani. If you are a Kolaja, there is a good chance that Strani is home.

I'm trying to follow the threads of this inquiry, and add a few. My grandfather was Samuel Kolaya. Born Kolaja, somewhere in the Austria-Hungary Empire, now the Czech Republic, around 1889. He had a brother named John. They all moved to Pennsylvania, I think to Jim Thorpe. Later my grandfather moved to NYC with his wife and 7 children. I am the daughter of one of those children. I know very little about the Kolaya family. Would love to know more and share the little knowledge I do have.

My grandfather's name was Martin Kolaya, but the name was changed from Kolaja. I live in NJ & have a brother Duane. My father, also John lived in Fort Lee, NJ with his brothers Martin, Steve and Joe. I have a number of Kolaya cousins, one of which (Steve) retains the "j" in his name.

My family formerly spelled our name with a "j", but changed it about 100 years ago. I was told by my now decesased Czech uncle that Kolaja means "wheelmaker". Is it true?

Laura, My family lives in NJ...many Kolaya cousins....our name was formerly spelled with a "j". I know that many of my grandfather's relatives moved to Jim Thorpe and other PA towns before WW2. My grandfather's name was Martin...he lived in Cliffside Pard, NJ. My father's name was John. he had brothers Martin, Steve and Joe (still alive) and a sister Annie (also alive). I'm 55 years old with a brother Duane Kolaya from Pine Bush, NY. John Kolaya

Hi John
My mother was a Kolaya. She had 6 siblings. The first born was John, in 1918 or there abouts. He, and the next two eldest, were born in what was Austria-Hungary. Don't know exactly where. They came to America in the early 20's and settled in Lansford, PA. They then moved to NYC. My grandfather, Samuel Kolaya, hung himself in NY in 1937. Don't know why. He had at least one brother, who lived in same area of PA. Any of this sound like family ties? We may very well be related. If you have more stories to tell...I'd love to hear them. Thanks. Laura
