my mother's maidian name was Kolacz but in the english it was spelled Kowatz. Her father's name was Walenty Kolacz and came over here around the turn of the 1900's. He married a Mary Musial in Plymouth PA.

Hello,

I found your posting on the Kolacz = Kowatz posting very interesting. I have been trying to find the origin of my great-great-grandfather Joseph Kowatz, born in the Beuthen region in Upper Silesia around 1810. The only name I have found so far in the Beuthen books around that time is a Joseph Kolacz. Apparently, if that name was to be written Kol~acz is would be pronounced somewhat like Kowatz. Have you heard of other Kolacz families that have changed their name spelling to Kowatz ?

Regards,

Ingolf vogel

Ingolf,

I have just begun to research my surname. I do however remember some of my fathers family pronouncing Kolacz as what could be spelled Kowatz, although the "tz" was prounounced more like the "ch" in cherry.

I will keep my eyes open for any other information regarding this spelling and forward any information I find to you if you send me your email address.

Go to Rymut's "Nazwisk w Polska" and type in Ko*ac* to get
variations on this name, AND, distribution in the old 49 provin-
ces in Poland. The L with a cross thru it gives the L a "W"
sound. Thus Kol~acz = KOH-wahch. Ko watz is German end-
ing probably in Prussia, incl. Silesia/Schlesien/Sla,sk! Check
Walbrzych, Wroclaw, Legnica, Jelenia Gora esp. in Rymut's
name distribution!!

Rymut's shows 4397 Ko l~ acz in Poland with some in Silesia
but many in Poznan & Galician provinces(old 49)! Again you
can type in "KoLac*" & also "Ka*ac*", the latter to get L~, for
Rymut's listing of surnames & distribution. Click on "skrotow"
for abbreviation full names of 49 provinces!

I am looking for the ancestors of Josephine Kolacz. She lived in and around Schenectady, NY. She married William Ryan and had three children; Richard J., Dorothy and Edward S.
