Hi Joe,

I was lead to this when someone was answering my email to a Charles Kohanek that married a Julia Mathusala. I think we might have something here since they are on my grandmothers side but the name Tibbets is on my grandfathers side. My grandmother is June Marie Burgvall. Her parents were Adolf Burgvall and Marie Kohanek. Marie's parents were Charles and Julia. I don't have much info any further back but I do have (I am pretty sure) a picture of Julia as the oldest of the four generations. Thanks Ramona

Charles Kohanek b. 1877

As I have mentioned to Ramona Chrisman, I have a copy of the Declaration Of Intent (Naturalization paper) for Charles Kohanek. If you are interested, please email me at vkohanek@rcn.com and I will send you the scanned copy. Do you have any more information on Charles or his brother Joseph? I will see if I can find marriage papers from Browerville, MN.

I am very interested in the photos you have of Charles, Joseph, and Rosemary. (vkohanek@rcn.com).

I have recieved information from the Browerville, Todd County, MN Recorder, Cheryl Perish. I asked her for marriage information for Charles and Julia. Her response follows:

"I checked marriages from 1867-1899 and didn't find either marriage. In the time frame the license had to be purchased in the county where the bride claimed her residency. If that helps at all.
I check deaths (1867-1975) and found two Kohanek's:
Charles Kohanek: born 7-18-1877 in Germany to Laurence (born in Germany) & (mother is listed as unknown - informant apparently didn't know the mother). He died 4-14-1947 in Ward Township, buried in St. Peter's Cemetery in Browerville MN. Wife & informant: Julia Kohanek.

Kathryn Kohanek: born 2-5-1886 to Joseph Mashuga & Mary Yaska. Died in Ward Township 8-6-1955. Buried in St Joseph's cemetery, Browerville MN. Informant listed as Kenneth Kohanek. [This could be Katie Mashuga who married Joseph Kohanek]

I checked births (1867-1935) and found:

Richard Victor Kohanek: who was born 10-26-1926 to Charles (whose age at this birth was 49-Germany) and Julia Mashuga. He was listed as the 7th child.

Geneeva Charlotte Kohanek: who was born 8-21-1926 to Charles (who age at this birth was shown as 49 yrs -Germany) & Julia Mashuga(age at this birth shown as 38 yrs-MN).
She was listed as the 7th child. *Seems strange that these two children are both listed as the 7th child. Makes me think Richard might of died between birth & this birth. Or possibly just reported incorrectly.

I don't know where the previous 6 children were born. Maybe if you find the marriage cert. they will be in the same county.

If you come up with anything more that you want us to check into give us names & possible dates - we'll give it a try.
I did try to find Julia Mashuga's birth but couldn't find that it was ever filed in Todd County anyway.

Good Luck!!

Charles Joe, Julia Kate

Did all 4 of them come to America in 1893? If not do you know where Julia and Kate Mashuga were born and/or when they came over? Also, do you know anything more about Separek being changed to Kohanek?
