My great grandfather, Karl Koffer, can to the US from the Baden area around 1875. He was a bookbinder and a Christian. My grandfather refused to discuss his ethnic origin and claimed to be "American". I have been told by German friends that Koffer is an exclusively Jewish name, and I know that bookbinding was a common Jewish profession. Koffer left Germany to avoid the draft. Jews were treated very badly in the German army, and hence many fled to the US. Does anyone know anything about this subject?
