looking for family records
I am really from the family of Kobak...my great-grandfather is Joseph Kobak from Croatia. He came to America a little before 1914. I would like to find his mother and father's name. I think he came from Karlovac, Croatia. He had three brothers, two of which came to the U.S. (Mike and Pete). But John, supposedly was a university professor and stayed in Croatia. Please contact me via email...thanks! His wife's maiden name i think was Mlach. She was from Croatia too...she came to america to visit relatives and ended up marrying Joseph.

I am also searching for records on the name. My family is located in Tyrone, Pa. I have found the surname on the wall at Ellis Island those listed are:Stanislaw Kobak, Wojcieck Albert Kobak, Anna Strozyk Kobak, Jozef Anna Kobak, Samuel Kobak,; however the origins for these names are recorded as Polish. This has been confusing for me because I have also seen the exact spelling of the name in the Roman Catholic Parish of Kamanje, Croatia. There were three brothers born in the US after my greatgrandparents arrived however, my greatgrandfather died early, when the boys were asked to write there names there were three different spellings: Kobak, Kobuck, Koback. I surly hope some of this sounds somewhat familiar to some one. I hope to hear some responce soon. Thanks. Jennifer

I saw your message on Ancestry.com regarding the name Kobok. My family name was changed to Kobuck from Kobak but I've also seen it spelled Kobok. My great grandfather, Frank Kobak, came to Pennsylvania from Restova, Croatia, around 1892.
Let me know what other information you are looking for. Thanks. Shelley L. Kobuck

I am really from the Kobak family. I, too, am originally from Tyrone, Pennsylvania. My great-grandfather was Frank Kobak (born November 1872) who immigrated from Restova, Croatia, around 1892. He died in May of 1915. I hired a researcher in Zagreb, Croatia, and she found the names of two generations before my great-grandfather. I only know of one other sibling to my great-grandfather which was a brother named Martin. I have found some family photos. Please contact me to share information. Thanks. Shelley

Hi again. I was just on the phone with my mother. She was able to verify that Frank Kobak was also my great-grandfather. Is your father Robert? In my latest research of the library of congress I also have found a longer version of the "kobak" name, Kobakhidze, Kobakura, Kobakova. My dad Don Kobak seems to rember a story of seeing my grandfathers christining gown which held a longer spelling of the surname. Most likley the "Original" spelling or something like that. Have you also heard of similar stories?

Longer Kobak Name/ Christening Gown.
Interesting, My father has that same story. Actually, Jennifer, I was suprised to find this board with such a recent entry.. I just happened upon it by dumb luck.

Jennifer - My grandfather (Andrew Ludwika Kobak) had several brothers and a sister. I knew three of the brothers and have met the sister. Joseph(Jozef) Helen Kobak, Stanley(Stanislaw) Josephine Kobak and John(Jan) Zosia Kobak. They are of Polish nationality. The sister (Sophie) still resides in Poland. I know for a fact that my greatgrandfather was Polish, lived in the late 1800's to early 1900's and had the surename Kobak (no derivation to the name).
