My husbands cousins are descended from Robert Knuckles of Bell County Kentucky. Very little information is known about the family. The only children I know of are Albert and Colson. Albert was born apx 1910. The Robert I speak of was married to Lillie. I am assuming that this Robert was born 1870 forward. There is an odd coincidence involved in this situation. This family lived in Beverly, Bell Co, KY in a mountainous community called Red Bird Mission. There were 3 Knuckles households in the area and all three refused to claim kinship to the others. I refuse to believe that there is not a least 'some' kinship between the families. Admittedly, I cannot recall ever hearing this particular surname until I got to know my husbands cousin almost 20 years ago so I find it hard to believe in the possibility that these three families would be no relationship at all and yet live so closely together. On of the other Knuckle's families was Bud Knuckles. Is there any possibility that this Bob Knuckles was the son of the Robert Knuckles of Harlan County, KY that I have read of? Does anyone have any information that may link to this family?

Also, I have begun a Knuckles mailing list for the convenience of Knuckles researchers. To subscribe email Knuckles-L-request@rootsweb.com to send mail use Knuckles-L@rootsweb.com I hope this will ease communications between other researchers.

Hi there. Just thought I'd write a line or two in response to your message. My father's family are all from Red Bird. My dad was one of 4 brothers born to William & Effie Knuckles. Dad was actually born in Hazard KY but was raised there in Red Bird. I wish was still alive as he would be able to tell you more than you ever wanted to know about the Knuckles Clan and Red Bird. I spent many summers there with my grandparents growing up. Although my father cant help here... he still has two brothers living that could tell you as much. In fact one of them still lives there either in Pineville or Middlesboro with his family. His name is Wayne Knuckles.

As far as being able to connect the Clans you mentioned..... sorry I couldnt help. But it always make me feel good to hear of Red Bird and my family. Great memories! If you feel I can help in some way please feel free to write.

Hello,

I have some references to Red Bird in my line. Let me know what you think.

Obadiah Knuckles or Nuckols (My GGGGreat Grandfather) (Virginia records spelled his name Obediah Nuchols) and Elizabeth Willis were married Feb. 3, 1801 in Goochland, VA.)

After Obadiah Nuckols' first wife died (Elizabeth Willis, they had just two children: Robert and William), he then married a Brittian, who (from a previous marriage(s) was the mother of "Uncle" Bill Nuckols. She and Obadiah had just one child - "Aunt" Sally Nuckols (more in next paragraph). In the following list are the names of Obadiah's stepchildren: (1) Carlo Helton; (2) Ephriam Helton; (3) William Helton (he took the Nuckols name and was called 'Uncle" Bill Nuckols); (4) Solomon Collins (later called Sol Nuckols); (5) Elizabeth Helton (she married Sol Nuckols). Elizabeth and Sol are the parents of Adkin Nuckols. Adkin had two sons: Ray and Floyd; and (6) Lucy Helton.
Sally Nuckols who was the last of Obadiah Nuckols children. She was a half-sister of "Uncle" Bill Nuckols. Her mother was a Brittian, as told by Bell County High Sheriff Jim Helton. Jim Helton was a son of Jonas Helton, who was a son of Carlo Helton and Elizabeth Farmer, (a daughter of Captain Jim Farmer and Susie Skidmore). Carlo Helton was a half-brother to "Uncle" Bill Nuckols. Morgan Helton (son of Carlo Helton) told that "Uncle" Bill Nuckols' Dad was Arnold Helton. "Uncle" Bill Nuckols had the first store and the first post office on Red Bird, in the headwaters of Red Bird. His great-grandson was Grover Knuckles (born April 7, 1923 - died January 7, 1994), who lived in Blanchester, Ohio. Grover Knuckles, wrote that "Uncle" Bill Nuckols first called the new post office Red Bird, Kentucky. Later "Uncle" Bill Nuckols changed the post office name to Beverly, Kentucky.

"Uncle Bill' (William Richard) Nuckols (My GGGreat Grandfather) (born March 10, 1841 Little Sycamore Creek, Claiborne Co. TN - died Sept. 2, 1910 Bell Co KY buried Knuckles Cem., Beverly, Bell Co KY) was a Veteran of the Civil War, a Union Soldier. He came back from the war and courted and married on April 14, 1865 (same day President Lincoln was assassinated) Amanda Jane Asher ("Mandy Jane") born Oct 29, 1845 - died Jan. 28, 1890 (a daughter of Wilkerson Asher and Lucinda Bingham). I believe "Uncle" Bill Nuckols (the stepson of Obadiah Nuckols) changed the spelling of the name "Nuckols" to "Knuckles".

George Matt Knuckles (My Great Great Grandfather) (George) born Dee 31, 1867 Red Bird (Beverly) Bell Co KY - died May 29, 1960 in Beverly, Bell Co. KY. buried in Pineville, Bell Co. KY Memorial Cemetery. m(l) 1891 in Bell Co KY.(divorced) Deborah Neal born Feb 1870 Clay Co. KY - died Feb 4, 1940 Red Bird, Bell Co. KY. (daughter of Hiram W. Neal and China Asher). m(2) Jan 14 1894 Jeff, Perry Co KY, Elizabeth (Liza or Lizie) Combs born Jan 25, 1877 Jeff, Perry Co. KY - d Oct. 28 1970 Bell Co KY, buried Pineville Cem. Their children were: (a) Amanda Jane (1894-1970); (b) William Clinton (L & N Railroad man, 1897-1984); (,c) William Letcher (school principal, 1899-1974); (d) Mason ( schooled and died in Iowa, 1900-1977); (e) Richmond (1902-before 1970); (f) Lonanna (.1906-1987) (g) Denver (state representative, 1908-1988); (h) Sampson (one time judge of Knox Co. 1909-1983)-, (i) Mauhee Beuhlah (1911-1991);(j) Juanita (1916-); (k) Vernon (1918-)

I would love to be on you list. Here is what I have traced so far:

Nuckols ancestor James Nuccol who signed the Blisland Complaint in 1676 in New Kent VA. dd

"James Nuccol" born in 1650 in England

William Nuckols b 1710 in Louisa County VA. He and his children were
were early Baptists and established what became the Goochland Baptist Church. About 1820 several of his grandchildren migrated to KY and other states.

I do not have proof but Obedian Nuckols b 1776,is probably the son of Charles Nuckols.
He is in the county records as marrying Elizabeth Willis, 1801, in Goochland Co VA.
Obediah served in the VA Militia during the War of 1812.

I am looking for information on Henry Knuckles who lived in Harlan Ky. He was a animal Dr. I think he lived in the Wallins area. Maybe died in 1955. I know of 3 of his children but don't know who there mother was. There names were Chris Knuckles, Mose Knuckles, and Anna Mae Knuckles.
Would appreciate any info on this family. I think Henry was from Bell Co. Ky.
