I am looking for some info on a John Knuckles from Grainger Tn who married a Jane Bray. At the time of their marriage supposedly he had to get permission to marry because he was half cherokee. What i am curious about is which one of his parents was cherokee and also supposedly his wife Jane was cherokee as well. If any of you have any info i would appreciate it since my great grandmother Mary was one of their children.

Full family line and ancestry at the Official Nuckolls Web site.

We have the marriage license and it says nothing about permission to marry. We think his mother might have been mulungeon, Nancy Goins, but no proof yet. Do you have any documentation other than family lore? DNA?

I got a message from another person here on ancestry who said that John had to ask permission to marry. I do know Mary (his daughter) was supposed to have been cherokee. If john had to have special permission to marry that would indicate a couple things. I am not sure if Jane was cherokee or not bec she is a total mystery.

Like I said the marriage document does not say that. We have a copy.[attached] You cannot rely on family lore to be correct information. All I know for SURE is that John was not full blooded Cherokee, if Cherokee at all. We have a Society member who descends from him, I will ask if he knows any stories.

Ok the info i got was the John Knuckles mother was full blood cherokee. A Nancy Goings a common cherokee name i gather. Based on the laws of tennessee at the time he would have had to have permission to marry a white woman so if there was no license then maybe Jane(jennie) Bray was part cherokee as well. I do know she was a mid wife and that was a role that was handed down in the cherokee clans.

Yes, in my original post I made the statement that Nancy, the mother was probably the Cherokee, but that means that the other DNA for all of her other descendants should also be Cherokee... I will ask around the Society, we have many members from this line. Goins is actually considered a mulungeon name.
