from newspaper, "Scranton Republican": "Matthew Knoble was found dead in bed Saturday morning at his home on Stone Avenue. Mr. Knoble had been a familiar figure on this side (reference to South Side of Scranton PA) for a number of years. He was a painter by trade and a veteran of the late war, being attached to the Thirty-fifth New Jersey infantry and a member of Ezra S. Griffin Post of the G.A.R. he was 52 years of age and leaves a wife and three daughters: Mrs. August Peters, Misses Mattie and Della Knoble. ..Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery. Mr. Knoble was born in Switzerland and came to this country when he was quite young. When the war broke out, he entered the Union Army and fought against his only surviving brother, John M. Knoble of Mulberry Street, who happened to be in the South and joined the Confederate Army."

John M. Knoble is burried in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Scranton. From my research he is the only Civil War Confederate veteran there. The grave he shares with his wife Mary Libbie Knoble is one of the most beautiful, in my opinion, in the entire cemetery. It has a beautiful statue of a woman on hand over her heart and the other hand pointing upwards toward Heaven.
