Hi,

My grandmother was Gladys Kneale from the Jurby/Ramsey area. She was born in 1917 and her mothers last name was Howland. I don't know the christian names of her parents and it is utterly frustrating. I would love to know if you have any record of them in your Kneale ancestry book. There were 7 children in the family and when their father died the eldest went to Ballamoar children's home. That is all we know.

Looking forward to hearing from you

I may be grasping at straws here but I am wondering if your Mary Gill from IOM may be related (sister?) to my William Gill b. 1802 in IOM. William immigrated sometime before 1834 when he married Rebecca Rice in Greene Trumbull County. He lived there had children, and dies (I think) in Greene Trumbull Ohio between 1851 and 1857.

Any connection?

My Mary Gill's brother WIlliam was born 25 JUN 1819 Lezayre, IOM. He came to America with the Gill family on the ship "Meridan" and arrived 28 JUN 1831. I have not been able to find him in the US. The rest of his family including my Mary were all in the Cleveland, Ohio area.

Thank you for your reply...

Regarding William Gill, the birth dates do not match, but the immigration time frame does. I suspect my William Gill immigrated sometime after 1830 and before 1834 (when he married Rebecca Rice), although he could have immigrated anytime between 1802 and 1834. He is in the 1840 and the 1850 Census in Greene Trumbull Ohio. In this area, he had 5 children and 2 marriages between 1838 and 1852.

I think I have your family's ship manifest in my records--for John and Isabella Gill--who traveled with 7 kids, Mary and William were one of the kids, right? Was your Mary Gill and her brother William of the large clan of Gill's that settled in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties? I've looked into this clan, and have not found any connection to my William Gill who was born in IOM in 1802, but I've kept them on my radar because the immigration time frame fits. There is also a John Gill who settled in Cass, Michigan born in 1801 from IOM, and another John Gill b. 1802 in IOM who lived in Sheffield Lorain Ohio in the 1850 Census--are these two guys part of your clan? May also be a connection there, but I have not found it.

I would be interested to know if there is anyone in your Gill clan that was born in 1802.

This may not be the same William, but perhaps 2 William's traveled together? I do not trust the birthdates on ship manifests completely, but I do not think they would mess up so badly as to confuse the dates of 1802 with 1819! :-o Any death records for your young William?

I am planning to order some microfilm from the FHC on Wednesday when they open for 3 possible ship manifests--the "Glascow"; the "Iris"; and the "Ceylon". I'm also going to write to the Trumbull County Historical Society for info on early land claims, tax records etc. to see if I can add more to the picture on my William Gill.

Let me know if you see any possible connection with the info above...Thanks! ~D
