My mother's maternal family is Kmieciak. My great-great grandfather and grandmother were Simon and Maryanna Glowczewski (d. Holy Week, 1888), Poland

My great-grandfather (June, 1838-1920) lived in Poland near Posen and married Katharine Glowczewski (Nov, 1844 -1919). John had a brother Tomasz (Dec 21, 1842, Poland -Jan 30, 1916), Milwaukee, WI. Tomasz's father was Filary?? Kmieciak. Tomasz maried Katarzyna and came to Milwaukee before 1882. Tomasz's niece and John and Katherine's daughter was Antoinette Kmieciak Waskowiak, my grandmother, who came to Joliet in 1902 and later to Milwaukee my grandfather, Frank Xaver Waskowiak. Antoinette had 6 siblings born in Poland from 1866-1888. Tomasz and Kataryzyna had 2 children, Josephine (b. 1878) and John ( 1882-1955), who was born in Milwaukee.

I do have more info. Does this look like a match? Would appreciate an answer.

Hello Fellow Kmieciak,

I don't know if we are related or not but our Kmieciak ancestors are from the same area of Poland - the diocese of Poznan ( Posen in German). In the 1800's this area was know as Prussia and is located in west central present day Poland.

My grandfather, WOJCIECH KMIECIAK (1867-1950), was from the small village of Bugaj near the villages of Miloslaw, Winna Gora, and Murzynowo Koscielne ( all of these are south of Wrzesnia, which is south of Gniezno in the woj.of Wielkopolska). Bugaj is in the diocese of Poznan. My grandfather's father was Josef and his mother was Agnes. I do know that when he came to America around 1894, he left relatives behind in Poland.

KMIECIAK is not a common name. KMIEC means peasant and IAK means son of a peasant.

Please feel free to contact me if you so wish.

My E-mail address has changed to sjbeyers@shawneelink.net

I had written in January 2005 about my grandmother, whose maiden name was Kmieciak. I have finally found where she and some siblings were born and married. They were born in Koninko, Posen, which is about 12 kilometers south east of Posen. I found that they lived there from mid 1870's to the early 1900's or later. I will use English names. My grandmother, Antoinette and siblings, Martin, and Frank (Francis) were born in Koninko and married in the area. I have found the records on microfilm from LDS. Yhe town of Miloslaw is about 50 kilometers SE of Posen.

Their father was John Kmieciak, born 1844, and Mother was Katherine Glowczeski. They remained in Poland. John's brother, Thomas, came to Milwaukee about 1880 and had 2 children, John and Martha. My grandmother came with her husband, Francis Xavier Waskowiak, to live with their family.

The elder John had older children, Maryanne, Anna, and Melchior, but I do not know where they were born. In the US census, Uncle Thomas was born in Poland Austria. I will look for records in your area for a possible connection. Have you found records of your family in Poland?

MY grandmother, Antoinette Kmieciak Waskowiak, came to Joliet with her husband, Francis Xavier, in 1903. They moved to Milwaukee as her Uncle Tomasz Kmieciak said good employment may exist in Milwaukee. I have posted a reply to Sharyn Kmieciak. You may be interested. Elaine

I am still looking for information on Joannes Kmieciak and brother Thomas born in German, or possibly, in Austrian Poland in 1830-1845. E-mail address is changed to: sj_ec_beyers@msn.com.
