My grandfather's name was Joseph Kmiec. Did your grandfather receive Virtuti Militari? If yes, maybe we had the same forefather...

You might check to see if your grandfather applied for citizenship. His Naturalization papers should show the town and country he was born in. That is the key to finding out more information.
Where was he during the 1910 census? Do you have an approximate year of birth for him? Did he have any siblings that came over here with him? Do you have their names and ages?
You said “a daughter was born to him 1904 she migrated 1897.” Are these dates transposed? This shows
My grandfather was also Joseph Francis Kmiec. I know he is not the same as yours as he was born in Aug 1865 in Prussia (a.k.a. Poland) and came to the U.S. with two older brothers, Piotr and Symon, around 1880. They first settled in Buffalo, Erie County, NY, and moved here to Texas about four or five years later.
My mother said that he really disliked the Russians because of what they were doing to the Polish people. If your grandfather was of age to be in the army when the Russians were in control then that is why he belonged. It probably was not his choice and he was probably Polish but had to join the army. There are some Kmiec surnames from Hungary, but most are Poles from “Poland.”
My grandfather’s parents, Fanianus Kmiec and Honorata Janczak, were married in Sobotka, Gorka, Poznan, Poland, 14 Nov 1852. Their first child was born there in 1853 and the rest of the children were born in Laskowa, Poznan, Prussia. There are extensive church records on these two locations at the LDS library. If you have an LDS Family History Center in your area you might want to get the film and check for your ancestors. If you can find out where he was from then you can check all of the church records through the LDS.
Let me know if you need any further help. I will start looking for your grandfather since it is the same name.
Good Luck
Joseph

thank you so much for your reply. some corrections. 1910 census has grandfather migrating from russia/poland in 1900, no known relatives. he was married here in america. joseph, josef, died in april, 1919. cannot find him coming here to america. found no naturalization requests. he lived in lackawanna cty, Pa. he died when my dad was only 2 yrs old. his 1st child born here in America in 1904. had 7 children b/4 he passed. last child born after he died. was a miner, was supposedly a mean person??? rumor has it he defected from russian army. possible captain. am having a hard time trying to find out when and where they actually married. church is closed. will have to check LDS. i undersstand that catholic churches do not give much info to LDS. thx again...joann

Sorry for replying so late. We went into Houston for dinner tonight. What year did Joseph Kmiec die and where is he buried. (Cemetery and town) I found him in the 1910 census.

Like my grandfather he probably did not apply for citizenship. I searched Eastern PA records 1890 through 1920 and did not find any record. Since we do not know how he spelled the last name I got creative and checked for all first names Josef and Joseph. Nothing there.

I will check the LDS records for PA for him.
I am trying to find out where the old PA Catholic records are stored. Here in Texas they are in Catholic archives in the state capitol in Austin. I need to find out if the Catholic church in PA has a state archives. I will keep working on that.
