Hello,

My grandparents ran the Kmetz Grocery Store in the Polish section Gary, Indiana sometime during the thirties. My mother was Agnes Clara Kmetz, the second youngest child in the family. I think she was born in 1914. Her parents, I think, were Stephen and Anna. Stephen committed suicide in 1936 but his death was listed as lung failure from mining.

My mother was estranged from her family and I have never known any of my relatives. She said we were of Austrian descent.

Let me know what you find out. I will try to find your book.

Actually Kmetz has become a rather common name in the United States. My great-grandfather was Michael Kmetz and he immigrated from Hungary. He worked at the Iron Works in Phoenixville, PA for a time and then moved his family to the Joliet, IL area. From there I lost him, although my great-grandmother moved back to Phoenixville with 4 of her children. Unfortunately she couldn't keep them and they were farmed out through the Chester County Children's Aid Society. I haven't been able to find 1 of the children from there--Michael. I've tracked Joseph who was in the Navy and buried in San Francisco National Cemetery. Anna was married to Charles West and lived in Atlantic City, NJ but I haven't been able to find where she is buried. Of course I know that my grandfather is buried in Coatesville, PA. One son, John, fell off the tracking at the same time as my great-grandfather. If any of this sounds familiar to you, I'd appreciate any info you may have. Thanks.
