I am trying to find out my ancestory, I think I'm hungarian, just trying to do some research. Started here first

My grandmother,(fathers'mother) was born Helena Kmet somewhere in Czechoslovakia. My father Frank Kristel (Frantisek Kristelova) came to Canada in the 1930's. He never spoke about his family or extended family. I only know that his brothers died during the war and his parents after the ruins of war. He always felt badly when news of death reached him and I think he just didn't have the strength to talk of the hardships. So I know absolutely nothing about his mothers' side except her name and that she was born in Slovakia. My other 3 grandparents were offspring from Germans who left Germany during the Refirmation era. If you can shed any light on this matter I would certainly appreciate it. Helenas' birth would have been in the late 1800's.

Origin must be Slovakian as the Kmet is pretty frequent surname in SLovakia. Before 1918 Slovakia was the part of Austria-Hungarian empire.

I don't know if this is your mom but ran across a clipping about a halena kmet who was from the eastern ukraine (austrian occupied pre wwI), was taken by the germans for slave labor in breslau, liberated by allied troops then came to detroit sponsored by my grandmother.
