Hi Kathleen,
Thanks for replying. My family has lived in Idaho since I was a year old. My younger siblings were born & raised in Idaho. We are related to the Rocknes that live in Boise. My grandfather's name was Knutson but he changed it later when he came to the USA from Norway.
Please write to me at my email address as I would love to find out more about the Rockne family.
I don't want to give out to much info on my family since this is a message board.
My email is joyrockne@hotmail.com
Thanks again for responding to my message.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Joy

i'm wandering if you have any info on the Gjerme/Gjermo family that lived around Cambridge/Koshkonong Praire - area of Wisconsin. Thought I'd give you a try cause seems we have connecting lines -- somewhere down the line? My Knute Brynjulvson Rockne (1719 - 1789 Voss) had a daughter , Kristense Knudsdatter Rockne- Gjelle born 1816. She married a Lars Bergesen Bersglien (later Gjerdskval) - father to the famous Bergslien boys.
The above Knud Rockne married a Guri Oddsdatter Gjelle in1798 ( inwhich he and Guri later lived at Gjelle) Anyways, if this is the right line i've got a bit more info on Knute/Knud Rockne. So let me know . But what i'm looking for is info on a Lars P. Gjerme/Gjermo and his wife Asjer R. Glimme- Gjermo/Gjerme. They supposedly lived in Koshkonong Prairie somewhere. Their children were : Mari (1821-1897), Margretha (1823-1827), Eli (1823 - ?), Synnova (1825 - 1905),Peder (1826 - ?) , Rognald ( 1839 -?), Knud (1841-1863), and Martha (1842 - ?). If you have and information I'd love to hear from you! Thank you

Hi there ... Your message certainly sounds like we have some connections somewhere down the line ... But I'm afraid I don't have any information about the Gjerme/Gjermo family in the US ... and limited info on them in Norway ... My great-grandmother was Brita Gjermo, sister to Martha Gjermo ... Brita married my great-grandfather, Anders Rokne, and Martha married his brother Lars (father to the coach) ... I do have very limited info on Brita and Martha's parents, but that's about it ... To be honest, I haven't been doing much research for a while, but would be very interested in what you have found, if it turns out we have the connections ... Nice to hear from you; I'll keep your message, and if I ever come up with additional information, I'll send it along ... Regards, Kathleen

I have a photograph with Bergen 1898 on the reverse and also written 1901 with Melissa (Melisa) Knute Rockne's mother (Alpheus Aunt) with her mother. ALso has Vossevangen on the reverse. (Melisa 15 years). ANy idea if this info is correct? Alpheus Hefte was my mothers cousin and lived in Fort Dodge Iowa most of his life.
Thank you

Scott, I'm not sure I can actually answer this question because I don't know if you're asking about Knute Rockne the coach or another Knute Rockne ... You have probably discovered that the name "Knut" (anglicized to "Knute") is extremely common in Norway, and nearly every family has a sprinkling of them. Also, the Rokne name derives from a farm name, as many surnames in Norway did ... so if your ancestor ever lived on a Rokne farm (there were at least two in Voss, the Big Rokne farm and the Little Rokne farm), then chances of them having the surname at least at some point are good ... The mother of Knute Rockne the coach was Martha Petersdattir Gjermo (sometimes Gjerme), who was a sister of my great-grandmother, Brita Gjermo ... Martha married Lars Rockne (the brother of my great-grandfather Anders) and Lars, Martha and their family immigrated to the US before 1900 ... the actual date escapes me now ... so I don't know what to say about your photograph that says "Melissa" ... Sorry I can't tell you more ...

Hi Kathleen.. thanks for the quick response....I see the dates are wrong on the photo if it were realted to the coach. But it looks like my mother's writing and not her cousin. Can I email you the photo? As a boy, I do remember Alpheus talking about the Knute Rockne connection.. perhaps the photo may shed some light?
thanks

Hi Scott ... Sure, go ahead and forward the photo ... I have a number of photos from that time frame as well, and it will be interesting to see if there's anything similar ... Also, I don't know if you are aware of this, but a cousin of mine, Birger Rokne, who still lives in Voss, is a Knute Rockne nut and has an amazing website with a lot of family tree information on it; basically he has traced everyone from our great-grandparents down to the present generation, and you might find some information there ... Let me know ... Kathleen

Surnames: Gjerme - Gjermo
I hope this info reaches you ..it's been 2 years ! Lars P. Gjermo/Gjerme and wife Asjer Rognaldsdatter Glimme ..did indeed initally settle in Koshkonong Prairie, but moved about 20 miles north to Leeds Township. Lars died 26 Sept 1847 and was buried in the Old Eilsen Cemetery in Leeds Township- as of 2006 my research has found that this cemetery is no longer in existance and many many years ago the stones were removed and land re-cultivated. Asjer - re-married 10 July 1852 to an Ole Knutson Fadness- Rongen. Asjer then died 20 May 1885 - I believe in Leeds Township are , where husband #2 is buried. I have never been able to find her stone, but Ole is buried at Spring Prairie Cemetery in Keyeser/Leeds area. Children of Lars P. Gjerme.... Mari, married Odd J. Himle 17 April 1845 and they settled in the area--both buried at Spring Prairie too... Margertha died 1827, Eli b 1823 married #1 Knud Nestby and #2 Baard Knudson, Synnova married Evan Robinson and re-moved to Worth County, Iowa, Knud b 11 April 1841 d 18 July 1863 in Nashville, TN from Civil War Injuries..and is buried at Nashville National Cemetery.
