I also have a copy of this picture. The woman in the picture is my great aunt. Her maiden name was Malinda Chally. She and Kjellman were married in Fargo sometime after 1880. The photograph is by O. E. Flaten a well known pioneer Norwegian-American photographer from Moorhead MN. Many of Flaten's negatives are preserved in the Clay County Historical Society Museum im Moorhead MN.

I have a later picture of the family with their four children.

Kjellman is listed in the 1880 US Census for Cass County ND as a resident of Fargo, He was born in Sweden.

Alexander Kjellman lived in Fargo, ND until about 1900. He is listed in early Fargo City directories as a "merchant tailor" He had a shop in Fargo until around 1900.

I understand the Kjellman family moved to the west coast (Washington state I think) around 1900. The are not listed in the 1900 Cass County ND(Fargo) census. After that point I have lost track of the family and would like to have information about them after they left Fargo..... J. Challey

Hi,

My name is Michael Carlberg, and I come from Sweden. I
just found a message in the Rootsweb message boards,
that you sent in 2002. It shows a picture, and you
mention that you think it might be of Matts and Bertha
Kjellman living in Coos County, Oregon in 1920. A
reply to your message the same year, reveals that it
probably isn't this couple on the picture, though.

What I wonder is: Despite that fact that it isn't them
on the picture, do you know anything about Matts and
Bertha Kjellman? She was an aunt of my grandfather,
from Finland. I know that her husband died in 1932,
and that she died in 1955, and that they had 5
daughters. Do you know more than that, for example,
something about the daughters? It is difficult to go
on with the research about them, since they must have
changed names, if they got married. Any information
you might have would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Michael

Penny,

Matts and Bertha were my great grandparents. Their daughter Huldah Irene Kjellman (Harrigan) was my grandmother. She died 2/4/2001 and lived in Sonoma, CA. She had 5 or 6 sisters, though I never met any. She moved to SF in the 20's, became a nurse and married Robert James Harrigan (Horrigan his named was changed after the 1906 earthquake) in the 30's and had three children. One, Robert James Harrigan Jr. is my father. Robert James Harrigan died in 1952 and Irene was a single mom, widow since.

Please let me know if you still have the photo, or a copy.

Thank you,
--
Thomas M. Harrigan

Michael,

I am the great grandson of Matts and Bertha and may be able to give you some info. If you have info from Sweden about the family, that would be great.
