Hi Cousin!
I believe that the connection started with Gudbrand Christensen who was first married to Elina Olsdotter Iverson Kjella. They had five children together. Kari Kjella & Ragndi Kjella, (twins), Kjersti Kjella, who married Christoffer Smedshammer, Ole Kjella and then Elina Kjella, who died at birth with her mother. Gudbrand then married Marthe Bolvigen Gudbrandsdotter. They had eight children - Ellina (died at birth) ,Gudbrand Kjos, Maren Kjella, Karl(died - age 4), Anne Kjella, Elise Kjella(who was my husband's grandmother), Gina(died - age 1 month) and Christian Kjos. Some had the last name of Kjella and some the last name of Kjos, depending on how the cottar name is taken. I'm still confused about that. Most of the Chose(Kjos), Smedshammer and Ross(Roos) family hail from Minnesota and North Dakota area. My husband (age 10 at the time) and his family moved to Seattle, Wa. in 1951 from Kathryn, North Dakota. There they took up residence with Elisa (Kjella) Ross (husband's grandmother) who had moved there after the death of her husband Carl Ross in 1941.
Please let me know if I'm on the right track! By the way, where are you hailing from?

Hello Cousin!

Yes that does ring a bell with me. I have census records that show a Gudbrand Kristens. Kjella. HE is listed as Husmand MJ. This listing was for Branbu for the 1900 census. My grandfather is listed as Anders Ellingson Kjelland in Norderhovs for the same year. Anders' father was not listed as Kjella either. The only ones that were listed as Kjella were my uncles as my grandfather had just left for the US. Oh my! This plot just gets thick! As near as I can figure, the tie lies with what you said. Somewhere back there especially since since taking the farm names seems to have happened later than when she was born, there has to be some connection. Another thing that I noted was the difference in spellings of the two properties. Yours is clearly Kjella where as mine is listed as Kjaella. My grandfather was not born with the Kjella or Kjelland surname as I thought he was. From what I found out he was simply Anders Ellingson. When I went into a site that explained the Norwegian naming practices then I was more confused. Whew, what a puzzle. When I find more information about this I will definately give you a heads up. I can send you copies of this paper work if you would like. I hail from Minnesota, just south of down town Minneapolis in the Whittier Neighborhood.
Chat with you soon,
Sandra

I would be thrilled to get or give any info.
Does your lineage come through Elina Olsdatter Kjella?
I can't find any Ellingson or any of the other names you mentioned in the family history book.

My grandfather, Gilbert Gulbrand Kjella Kjos was the son of Gulbrand Kjella (1825-1906 and Marte Bolvigen. Gilbert was born near Henning in 1869 and moved to American in 1893. He married Helena Rofshus at East Freeborn Lutheran Church in 1900. Two of their children, Doris & Helen, are still living in Minnesota.

Hi Warren!
I was glad to finally hear from someone. You must be the son of Grace Irene and Warren Stowell. My husband is the grandson of Elise Kjella Ross. She was your grandfathers sister. She was quite a wonderful lady, and lived to be 96 years of age. We all miss her very much. My husband's mother, Edith Ross Chose is now 87 years and still going strong. Thanks,Kerry

I found this information on the Nils Elsrud site. Would this be the Kjella's you are related to? If this is, then we are related distantly. "From Aadalen settlement included Ole Palmeson Kjella and his brothers Gulbrand Palmeson and Helge Palmeson. Ole and Gulbrand Palmeson were killed in the 1862 Sioux uprising." Otherwise, I am still at a loss on finding information for you. From what Nils says, there is my farm in Norderhov and another in Aadalen. Is this your relatives farm?
