Need to know his father; it may be JOHN and it may not be. His mother was ANNA NANCY KITCHELL; was a cousin so had maiden name and married name the same. JHK born circa 1790 possibly in New Jersey near or in Newark. He later settled in Crawford County Illinois where the descendants have lived for close to 200 years. He married NANCY GILL 14 Aug 1821 in Palestine, IL; she was daughter of Thomas Gill and Hannah Criswell. He d.24 Mar 1862 Palestine, IL and is buried there. He may be grandson of Obadiah Kitchell, a Rev War veteran, but I can not confirm lineage with any record. Any one who can get him BORN somewhere and name his parents will be appreciated. I am a fifth generation descendant and can fill in most everything below him in the family tree.

You are correct. John Kitchel, born 6 Aug 1766 at Hanover, NJ and died abt 1813 in Hamilton Cty, Ohio was James Harvey's father. Obadiah is John's father. They are all direct descendants of Robert Kitchell who came to America from Kent Cty England in 1639. This is all documented in the Kitchell Family History.

Thank you, Dwain Kitchel, for the message about James Harvey Kitchell's father. I still can find no confirming documents or dates to get James Harvey Kitchell actually born. Could you reveal the source of how you know this information is true? I have found your book in the Fort Wayne, IN library and have used it even though I am 90 miles away. My inquiries show it is out of print and unavailable for purchase. I found no date of birth for JHK or place of birth. I have always heard by the oral tradition that John Kitchel was his father since there has been a rich oral family history of the Kitchell family in Palestine, IL since they arrived about 1808. I am a descendant and my father has the original town platt of Palestine written in the hand of Joseph Kitchel.

Mary,

We tried to document our sources and included references after the RIN entry of each person in the Kitchell Family History. The sources for the information on James Harvey were: Rev Whallon's book printed in 1934, Harriet Easley, PO Box 1047, Palmer, Arkansas 99645 and George and Ginger Jansen's extensive Kitchell records. I know George Jansen can be reached via the internet. Harriet Easley's address is 1988 vintage so I have no idea whether she still lives there. A copy of Rev. Whallon's book is in the Cincinatti, Ohio library as well as most of the backup research material that Dee and I collected in producing the Kitchell Family History. Dee boxed it up and donated it to the library. I am sure it resides there somewhere in a deep archive. Wishing you continued good luck on your search for details of James Harvey Kitchell's.

My name is Kenton Bennett, and James Harvey Kitchell was my gr gr grandfather of Palestine, Ill. His daughter, by Nancy Gill, was Hannah, who married my gr grandfather Nathaniel Steele. I found this out from the family bible of Hannah "June" Steele, and from a memorial and obituary of Dr Steele..I am descended through Mary "Mollie Steele Voliva and Ruth Voliva, my mother. I am 71 and live in Miami Fla. I am interested in info about James Harvey, whose mother is burried in Palestine Cemetery, where James and Nancy are also. I have seen conflicting info that he was born in New York vs Butler County, Ohio in 1798. He died in 1862 in Palestine. I would love to hear form relatives!!!!

Hello, My name is Kenton Bennett. I trace my line to James Harvey Kitchell through his daughter Hannah Kitchell Steele (Molllie Steele Voliva and Ruth Voliva Bennett. Most sites I have visited make his father to be John Kitchell who settled (Along with Asa And a cousin John Kitchell)in Butler County, Ohio and who died there in 1813. All the siblings of JHK were born there but he is usually shown born in Brooklyn, N Y The Jansen Family Line to the Kitchell's show his father to be the John of Butler County. He was, I believe, Commisioner of Highways and John Kitchell, brother to Asa Kitchell(both of Rev War was a judge and helped write the Ohio Constitution in 1803 and who died in 1807.) Asa was father to Anna Nancy Kitchell and Joseph Kitchell, land speculater (Judge and representative to Ilinois Legislature in the 1820's, who donated land to start Palestine along with McCullum.

I would be interested in documentation also. Just because everyone says John, who was son of Obediah and was JHK father doesn't make it true. Everyone could have been misled. Why would John have gone back to the New Jersey and New York area to have JHK??? (They were from that area so it ccould be he did return there for a short time. Documentation would be there if anywhere or in Butler County, Ohio.
Nancy Anna is burried next to James Harvey in the Palestine Cemetery, Palestine, Illinois.(She died in 1838 only a month before Thomas Gill, Nancy's father!!!!
I would very much like to communicate with you on the families of Gill and Kitchell. My grandmother was one of three daughters of Dr Nathaniel Steele and Hannah Kitchell, (which is n a bible I have. I also have a memorial and obituary of Mollie and of DR Steele)

I haven't checked the message board for a while so this is in reply to your message 21 Sep 2007. I still have found no documentation for James Harvey Kitchell b.place yet either. The Census record 1860 p391 for Crawford County IL, shows he said he was born New York, but I'm still betting he said "Newark" and the census taker didn't understand correctly. I'm not sure about one note in your message about Nancy Gill Kitchell, wife of JHK, dying in 1838. I have seen her gravestone in the Palestine Cemetery Aug 1995. Copied dates for birth and death from gravestone. Hers were complete dates with month, day and year. b. 3 Feb 1802 d.5 Nov 1877. Also said Aged 75 y 9 m 2 d. Her picture has been passed down through the family it is also noted on the back with these dates. I will be happy to share the picture by email in jpg form. I also have pictures of Eva Steele and June Hannah Steele Smith who were Mollie's sisters. I don't have b.dates or d.dates on either but they were good friends and cousins of my grandmother Ola Kitchell Taylor. I knew June Smith and her daughter Portia Smith from the Presbyterian Church in Palestine. We all attended every Sunday. My email is mshort3@mac.com if you want to make contact for pictures and what little information I have on your family. I would be interested in the obits for Mollie and Dr. Steele.
