Looking for the ancestors and further descendants of Francis Kirby, a tailor, and his Wife, Eleanor or Elena or Helena or Hellen who settled in Kirby Underdale, East Riding, Yorkshire in about 1680. Their descendants are also known to have lived at Scrayingham, Skirpenbeck, Acklam, Bishop Wilton (all in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England).

Hi,
I have some Kirby ancestors from Yorkshire, just wondering if they might be related. The info I have is as follows:

Hugh Kirby married Hanna Ince and they had a daughter Ann in 1793 in Parish of Watton, Yorkshire. Ann married James Metcalf in 1814, also in Parish of Watton.

If any of this rings any bells please contact me at kristy31@hotmail.com. Thanks!

Hi Margaret,
Saw your posting re Kirbys in East Yorkshire. I have many records from parishes in East Yorkshire, in particular Kirby Underdale and surrounding parishes, as my own Kirby ancestors come from that area. Please let me know what you are looking for, and I will see what I can do to help. Looking forward to your reply.

I seek Richard Kirby born Watton?Hutton Cranswick area 1791 or early 1792, married Maria Peck. His father may of originated in Lund. My branch farmed many acres in this area in first half of 1800s. One of his grandson, Nelson emigrated to Australia where he became Mayor of one town, and his brother Glaves went on to New Zealand.

Hi Margaret,
I found the following Richard Kirbys in PRs and BTs:
Richard Kirby s/o Richard and Ann b. May 2, 1790 Leppington, bapt. Scrayingham
Richard Kirby b. 20 April, 1794, Huggate
Richard Kirby m. Maria Peck 09 Feb. 1813 Watton
Richard Kirby m. Mary Stephenson 20 Aug. 1815 Watton
Is it possible that Richard was born earlier than 1790-1792? At the time, most men married closer to 30, so perhaps Richard was born in the 1880s, maybe earlier if this was a second marriage.

In a previous query, you mentioned Hugh Kirby, born at Kirby Underdale, age 85 in Pickering Census of 1851. My ancestor Thomas Kirby, a shepherd at Deepdale House in Kirby Underdale, had a son Hugh Kirby on Feb. 4, 1766. (date and place fits perfectly!) Hugh had a twin sister Mary, as well as siblings William, Thomas, Hannah, and George. Do you have any other info on Hugh? Let me know if you need more details about this family.

Sorry - noother infor on Hugh Kirby
Thanks for information regarding
Richards date of birth Iworked out from a combination of his age/date of death and the date he gave at his marriage to Maria Peck, although I do realise that they often fibbed (or were not sure) about the dates of birth or their age!

Hi Carolyn,

Do you have knowledge of Hugh Kirby (1655-1695) of Bishop Wilton, E.R.Y., England and his wife, Jane unknown (1660-1739)? These two must be the ancestors of my 3rd Gr. Grandfather, William Kirby (1794-1886)of Acklam, E.R.Y., England who came to the U.S. in 1839. As far as I can tell, he died in Cincinnati, Ohio. He had three wives, Mary Bogg, Jane Smith, and Eliza unknown (-1876).I haven't been able to determine which of his three marriages produced my 2nd Gr. Grandmother, Charlotte Mae Kirby (1826-1890)who came to the U.S. about 1842 and married William Guilford. I have a beautiful picture of her at age 16. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

As far as I am aware, William Kirby m. Mary Bogg in Yorkshire, England and when she died, he moved to Montreal Canada where he met and married Jane Smith. They then moved to East Hawkesbury, County Prescott, Ontario. He had no other wives. His children are, amongst others, William Smith Kirby, John Mead Kirby and my ancestor Thomas Halder Kirby. He is listed in 1871 Canadian Census (age 75) but has died by 1881 census.

Thank you for your answer. It appears that I am up against the proverbial brick wall!

My Great Great Grandmother, Charlotte Mae Kirby was born 4 Jan 1826 in Kirby Kurist, Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Charlotte came to Cincinnati, Ohio with her father about 1842 from Kirby Kurist, Leeds, Yorkshire, England when she was 16. I have a picture taken of her at that age. She married Dr. William Guilford in 1847 and had nine children, the eldest being my great grandmother, Charlotte (Carlotta) Belle Guilford. Charlotte Mae Kirby became a Socialite in the Washington, D.C. area and the raising of the children fell to my great grandmother. There is another picture of her in a ball gown with her beautiful fan, presumably at the time she led the Cotillon at a Washington party. (I am assuming it was a Washington Cotillon, but it may in fact have been the Baltimore Cotillon.)

Charlotte's older brother William Kirby was born 13 Oct 1817 in Kingston-Upon-Hull,Yorkshire, England. He was the first one to leave England in 1839. He moved to Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario, Canada and married Eliza Magdalene Whitmore. He was a Novelist and Journalist there. I don't have names of other siblings for Charlotte and William. Their father's name is William and family tradition states that his wife's name is Eliza and thus my story ends until I can find more information on them. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Brandy
