Kipen family in Germany, Ohio, and Michigan

Hello!

I am not a Kipen (that I know of :>) but I often come across that name when doing my own family research. Brohl is in the Eifel Mountain area north of the Mosel River - west of the Rhine, northeast of Cochem and north of Karden. It is where my ancestors, the Einig family, were from.

Lots of German Catholics from that area around Cochem moved to the US in the 1840s. Some stayed in Buffalo NY, others stopped at Erie PA, and most of the ones I'm descended from moved to the Cleveland - Elyria area (Cuyahoga and Lorain counties in Ohio)

In fact, there is a graveyard that is surprising like that of St. Mary's New Salem in Allegan County MI because so many of the names are the same. I am referring to St. Theresa (may have the spelling wrong) in Sheffield. The families included: Diederich (several spellings) Weber Steffes Einig Schumacker (several spellings) Biermacher, Alflen, Kipen, etc. Since it sounds like at least one of the writers on this list is from the Allegan County branch, those names probably ring bells for you.

Well, hope this helps some - and feel free to write me with allied names, as all these families seemed to intermarry.

Surnames: Einig Smith Schneider DeGrafft Platz Tonner Carlisle Carline Nail Sandaford Patterson Gundrum Lombardi Gonella
The information from this line is primarily from Patrica DeGrafft Platz. Patricia wrote "Faith & Marriage: The Einig Family" and shared it with me in July 2000. She noted that there were other contributors including: Karl-Josef Tonner of Germany, Mick Carline of NE (who helped with the Schneider info); Richard Gundrum of IN; Dorothy Lombardi of CO, and Regina Gonella of CA.

Bartholomaus Einig also known as: Barthol; Bartholomew, Barthel b. ?? ___ 1826, Germany, died ?? ___ 1876, FL. Occupation: sawmill owner, engineer, m. (1) 15 Jan 1849, in OH Lorain Co. to Magdalena Schneider, b. ?? ___ 1832, Germany, m. (2) 18 Nov 1873, in FL Volusia Co. to Charlotte Smith, b. ?? ___ 1855, MS.

Barthol Einig came to the US in OH in 1841 at age 15. He was listed on the 1850 (roll 672) Cuyahoga Co. (Cleveland) Census as a 24 year old engineer with real estate valued at $200 - born Germany. An 1857 Russia Twp. OH plat map shows an Einig and Freeman sawmill. The 1860 Lorain Co. OH Census - Amherst Twp. p. 150 shows:

* Einice, Bartholomar age 34, farmer, real estate valued at $800 with personal goods valued at $300, born in Prussia.
* Magdalena age 28 Prussia
*Mary 8
*John 6
*Anna 1

Lorain Co. OH Land records show that he bought land from Andrew Schneider in 1860 (Book 14, p. 549, lot 1 Amherstville); Nehemiah Gibson in 1860 (Book 14, p. 500 lot 1, Amherstville), and from Hiram Belden in 1860 (Book 14, p. 550 lot 1 Amherstville). Also, it shows that Magdalena Einig bought land from Samuel Kendeigh in 1864 (Book 19, p. 218, lot 72 Amherstville) and also from Edward F. Howe (Book 22, p. 495, lot 33 Amherst)"

At some time between 1860 and 1869, he moved to Florida. Florida land records she shared include the following: "We, C. Morrow and J.R. Watson do solemnly swear that we have known Bartholomew Einig for seven years past, and that he is the head of a family consisting of a wife and two children, a citizen of the United States; that he is an inhabitant of the west half of North East quarter of .... and that no other person resided upon the said land... to the right of Homestead or Pre... That the said Bartholomew EInig entered upon and made settlement on said house and made it his exclusive home from the first day of October 1869 to the present time and that he has since.. settlement plowed, fenced, and cultivated about 10 acres of said land and has made the following improvements... built a house with several rooms, planted an orange grove of 100 trees besides others kinds of fruit trees, ditched and drained about 40 acres for planting sugar cane... 18th day December 1875.

He died in Florida and his will was dated 15 August 1876.
