Surnames: KIOUS, ROTH, STEEL
Rebecca Kious was born February 8, 1853 to Milian Alkire and Nancy Fierce Kious of Brookston, Indiana. Rebecca was the third of eight children.

The 1860 Federal Census taken in White County, Prairie Township, Brookston, Indiana indicates that Rebecca was around 7 years old. The next census taken was the 1870 Federal Census dated 7/14/1870 from the same area. This census has Rebecca 17 years old living with John D. Cutter (Cutler) and family. Mr. Cutter had several laborers living at his residence Rebecca was listed as a domestic servant. Rebecca was pregnant with my great grandmother Adeline Kious. Adeline’s birthday is January 10, 1871.

In 1881, when Adeline was 10 years old her mother Rebecca married widower Daniel Roth of Dayton, Indiana. Daniel Roth had four children at the time of the marriage. Daniel and Rebecca would have two children of their own Elmer Clair and Harry Dale. Harry died at the age of 24 years, he is buried in the Dayton Cemetery along with Daniel and Rebecca. Elmer married Elda B Newhard and moved to Des Moines, Iowa. I have lost track of them.

The 1930 US Census indicates that Rebecca returned to Brookston and lived with her brother John T. Kious.

The 1860 Federal Census taken in White County, Prairie Township, Brookston, Indiana indicates that Rebecca's mother and father have two grandchildren living with them.
Gertrude Kious age 5 yrs b. 1875, and Leora A. Kious age 9 yrs b. 1871. There is some indication that these two children are also Rebecca's illegitimate children.

Gertrude married Frank Steel and listed her mother as Rebecca. I have no real documentation on this yet. They received their marriage license thru Lafayette, Indiana, Tippecanoe County. She and Frank moved to Illinois but returned to be buried in Dayton Indiana Cemetery.

I have no more information on her sister Leora.

I would like any information about Gertrude's sister Leora.

My Great-grandmother is Gertrude Kious. Could Leora and Adeline be the same? The family only ever spoke of one sister, Aunt Addy. Fyi, Daniel and Rebecca also went by Rhodes. I have lots of photos! Do you have any of Adeline??

Thanks so much contacting me. It is so nice to actually get an answer thru this link.

I think you could be right about Leora and Adeline being the same person. In one of the census taken when both Gertrude and Leora lived with their grandparents it is listed as Leora middle initial A.

I have only two pics of Adeline. I will need to find them and scan them into my system. I had to restore my computer back to its factory setup and have lost several things. But, will send them to you as soon as I can.
