David Lloyd Kinsey was born in Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire in 1881, the son of another David Lloyd Kinsey and his wife Mary Harriet (Pugh).

On Jun 25th 1900 he enlisted for 3 years in the Grenadier Guards and the 1901 census shows him based in the barracks at Windsor Castle.

On June 30th 1903 he extends his service to 8 years, but three months later he is convicted by the civil authorities for theft and fined. On Oct 3rd 1903 he is dishonourably discharged losing his entitlement to a pension.

On April 4th 1906 he emigrates to South Africa, disembarking at Cape Town.
