Martin David I believe is the son of Martin J. Kington and his second wife. But it is the same Martin J. Kington. I could be slightly off on this though as far as which woman is his mother. Most of the Kington's in TN and GA are related. Story goes that after John passed away the family got into a dispute over the land and William C. Kington apparently lost and there was bad blood, he moved to GA.

Note: this says John's parents were Martin J. Kington and Unk Cannon, by the way it is written is sounds like it is being said that John Kington who married Eleanor was the son of Martin J. this would be incorrect. Martin J. Kington is the grandson of John and Eleanor and the Unk. Cannon is Martha J. Cannon daughter of Bird Cannon and Lucinda Morgan. Martin J. Kington was married first to Martha J. Cannon and secondly to Nancy Meadows or Weathers can't remember which last name it was, but it is posted by someone else earlier on in the posts. Martin J. Kington had children with both women. I am descended from Martin J. Kington and Martha J. Cannon Kington.

J.M. Kington is not listed as a son of Martin J. Kington. there is a John R. Kington who is his son. Although I did not have information stating Martin's father may be a John M. Kington I have started assuming the possibility. the M.J. Kington may be a son of a brother of Martin J. though. Martin J. definitely shows as being born in TN in census, but may have gone through Walker Co. GA. Broomtown AL was actually Cherokee Co, AL is now a ghost town, but Meditone, AL is in Dekalb and there appears to be a Kington family there as well that Meditone family is related to a Martin Kington and Nancy Weathers in TN area. That Martin had a son by the name of Curtis Hayden Kington. And this family ends up in Meditone, AL. I believe the Meditone Martin may be Martin David Kington also of TN/Ga, but he was born in 1842-1849. I also do not show a Martin for son of Martin J. Kington. Unless Martin J. was married prior to marrying Martha and had a child, but he would have shown up in 1850 census of Martin J and Martha J. Kington Cherokee Co. AL if that were the case. So for now I am ruling out any family connection to Meditone AL Kington's. Until I can actually find a father and mother to Martin J. Kington.

Yes, I sent the person who is looking for Martin J. Kington the information I know. We may be related to M.J. Kington though as we have not found parentage. Census shows him born in TN. Also 1860 census of Cherokee Co. AL (not DeKalb)Broomtown states he is 42 years old and that would place his birth at 1818. He very well could have met his wife Cannon in Walker or Habersham Ga as she is Martha J. Cannon's daughter of Bird Cannon and Lucinda Morgan. Martin J. & Martha J.'s daughter Mary Lucinda Kington married John Henry Roach. Martha J. was 22 or 23 in the 1850 census of Cherokee AL and already married to Martin J.
M.J. Kington may be a cousin or something. I have a feeling there may be a John Martin Kington floating around in Walker Co GA and TN that may tie this all together as I think the J probably stands for John/Jonathan.

The J.M. Kington referred to as husband of Florence Kington in Walker Co. Ga., is not your Martin J. Kington. Although it is possible he may be related to them. Martin J. Kington married martha J. Cannon. You will find them in 1850 and 1860 census for Cherokee Co. AL. This Martin J. Kington was born in Tennessee around 1818, but may have been in Walker Co. Ga prior to AL. The Cannon family originated in Va, went to SC, then to Habersham and Walker Counties of Ga and then to AL. Florence was born in 1860 too late to be your ggggrandmother. By the way, is this Kerry? I too descend from Mary Lucinda (Lou)(named after her grandmother Lucinda Morgan) Kington and John Henry Roach.

I am not sure if Martin J. Kington had a son by the name of Martin either.

Wm. B. Kington (William?)
Malissa Kington
Louis Kington
John R. Kington are the children listed in the 1860 Cherokee Co. AL census, but I know they had Mary Lucinda Kington also. I show Broomtown area of birth's for most if not all. I lost them after that, but appears Louis & Malissa buried in Broomtown at Church of Christ. So not sure that Martin and Martha left area. Unless they left later.

Could your William Kington be William B. (Bird) Kington? I stumbled across this while searching for another William Kington:

William Bird Kington
4 Jan. 1854 - 8 Feb. 1841
Garden of Memories Cemetery
Hatch, Dona Ana County, NM

I realize the birthdate is 11 years off from the one you stated. I am fairly sure I saw this same man with his family, listed as William B. Kington, in the 1920 Census living in Throckmorton Co. Texas. The clue that this is the same family is that this Texas William was living next door to a Martin Kington who was in his twenties (possibly a son?). The William C. Kington whose info you got from Ray Kington is William Caffrey Kington who married Rosana (Rhoda) Rector. Their son, John G., had a daughter named Laura who was my great-grandmother. William C. died before 1850 in Walker Co GA. Anyway, this Texas William also had a daughter named Rhoda. It sounds like the same family to me. You can e-mail me at tommy@thwgraphics.com if interested.

Actually she is listed on the headstone as "wife of J. M. Kington" and her dates are 1862 to 1917. I took a photo of the grave and would be happy to send you a copy. The cemetery is on Page Road which ends at Lakeview Drive. The entrance to Winnepesaukah is directly across from this intersection. Going north on Page, the cemetery is on the right surrounded by a metal fence. The front gate is padlocked but there is an open gate on the left-hand side. We parked in the lot of some apartments to the left of the cemetery. Florence's grave is to the left of the front gate, my great grandparents are to the right, both facing the road. I did not see any other Kingtons in the cemetery.

Thomas,

I lived in Chattanooga for a number of years. Can you give me more on the location of the cemetery (name of the road near amusement park? My great grandmother was Mary Lou Kingston. She married John Henry Roach of Walker County. They lived in DeKalb Co (Broometown, AL) for a number of years. Her father was Martin J. Kington. Luis and Melissa (who I assume to be her brother and sister) are buried in the Church of Christ cemetery in Broometown. Martin moved to the Chattanooga area according to the census data. The grave of the wife of MJ Kington may well be my gggrandmother. Thanks.

Thanks Tom. It appears that I got to excited about finding a possible relation and didn't look at the dates. I would guess that JM KIngston may be a SON of MJ Kingston. My grandfather was named after his grand father. They named him John Martin and called Martin. An interesting possiblity that JM was name John Martin to keep form being a Jr. I have digital photos of the graves at Broometown along with a image of a deed to MJ for property in DeKalb, AL. If your interesed in exchanging, just let me know.

Have you been able to confirm a marriage between the Tennessee Kington you mention and James Marcum? I'm curious as to why you think she may have married him. If she did, do you know about when that marriage may have taken place? Do you know where Tennessee Kington was living in 1860 and/or 1870? I've not been able to find anything definitive about her after the 1850 census for Walker County, GA. Any information you might have would be helpful.

Yes I would, I don't know who the father of John Kington was. Another question I have is about Ellen Kington. She married Elijah Cross. Ellen died in 1856 apparently giving birth. Elijah remarried to Sarah Smith nee Reed. I am trying to find some of Elijah's descendants. Surely there are some still in the area of Oliver Springs. Got any ideas? You can send to my email tyler952001@yahoo.com or give me your email and I'll give you my mailing address.

My family is related to the Kingtons through William Caffrey Kington, your John Kington's brother. William married Rhoda/Rosana Rector, whom I believe to be Sarah's cousin. This family moved to Walker County GA prior to 1840. My great-grandmother, Laura Ann Kington, was the daughter of John G. (Gaines, I think) Kington (b. 1825, TN). Laura married my great-grandfather, William Crawford Westbrook, in 1875. There seems to have been some big lawsuit and trial over the will of Rosana Rector's father, Martin Rector, in the 1830's. William Kington and the other plaintiffs lost the case. This seems to have split the family apart. Some went to KY and IL, others (William and brother Nicholas) to GA. Some stayed in TN. William C. died prior to 1850 but the family with Rosana as head can be seen in the 1850 census on the Walker County website.

Your information appears off kilter? Maybe I am misreading what you wrote, but it started out with a John in Dinwiddle or something like that, lists names and then states john is was son of Martin J. Your years don't look right unless I am missing something in the interpretation. Please look at what I have and see if you can help me. Martin J. Kington and Martha J. Cannon (b. abt 1827) were in Alabama. see Cherokee AL a860 census their children are listed as Louis C. Kington, William B. Kington, John R. Kington, Malissa A. Kington. They also had another daughter Mary L. (lucinda) Kington who married John Henry Roach. Martin J. Kington was born around 1818 in TN, but I do not have any information regarding his family. Martha J. Cannon is daughter of Bird Cannon and Lucinda Morgan. I am related to them through Mary L. and John Henry Roach. Do you have information as to parents etc of martin J. Kington?
