Is Kinally an uncommon name?? I seem to be having alot of problems with it. My GG Grandfather was Benjamin John Kinally on the census it says from England, on his marriage certificate it says his father is a John McKinally, I've tried searching for Benjamins brith certificate and all i can find is a Benjamin John McKinelley. I'm finding it all abit confusing and i'm not sure if i'm going along the wrong line can anyone help? I have a story that was written by one of Benjamins daughters and she has put her name as a McKinally but unfortunately the story is only 2 pages and tells about the start of her life and nothing else. I would say Benjamin was born 1861/62

Hello

Thank you for your reply, i do already have that information though but i'm not sure if the 1901 census is right benjamins wife (sarah) and younger daughter (Kathleen) aren't on there. What i'm stuck with is finding his birth certificate, i went to the FRC on saturday and there is a Benjamin John McKinelley born in 1961 which must be him unless he was born somewhere else and i can't find anything on the name Kinally.

Thanx for your help

Kerry

no sorry i got that wrong!!! On the 1901 Census it says Benjamins wife is a sarah but her name was Bessie, although it seems strange that his mother seems to have been called sarah. I've looked for Bessie and their daughter Kathleen (3yrs) on the census but can't find them.... i'm certain it's the same family though with the childrens names and order they were born matching Kathleens story.

Sorry about the confusion, once again thanx

Hello Kerry,
I have seen the the birth entry for Benjamin John Mckinelley
june qrt 1861,St George,vol 1d,page 120.

Have you sent for it, if not it may be worth it to put your mind at rest.

I found the marriage for Bessie Maria Hooker and Benjamin Mckinally. june 1883, St Saviour, vol 1d,page 52..
But have seen from your other posting that you have this info and the Hooker family on the 1881 census.

It may be possable that Bessis had died and Benjamin married soon after a Sarah or he nick named her after is mother? and he called his wife this when the census man was in the house.

But were was Kathleen age 3 ?.perhaps she had a pet name when small and she was staying with other family? or was ill and not seen, at this time children were not always counted as part of the family untill well grown, because of death from child hood illness.Or just out playing and got missed.

A lot of Irish people and their decendants with Irish sounding names did drop the "Mc", "Mac" and "O," so as to sound less Irish, As the Irish were discriminated in the worsed way in Britian, so did so to live.
And add the fact alot of people did not read and write.
People often spelt their name how they sounded, so the name could also change from one person to another in the same family.
Then there are mistake from people reading and transcribing records incorectly.

BUT we get there in the end.
Good luck
Theresa

Hello again

Yes i am in the process of ordering Benjamins birth certifcate along with a few others at the moment.
I know Bessie was definitely still alive because i have a story that Kathleen wrote in it it mentions that Benjamin was a RC and Bessie was Church of England but the children were brought up in a RC Church (which means he was Irish right?) Apparently Benjamins friends came over from Ireland to work which lead to Benjamin drinking and gambling, it says he used to say there were pink elephants running up the wall and rats all over him. Bessie became ill and the children went into a workhouse apparently bessie got the children back one by one and the boys offered to find her a nice place without Benjamin but she wouldnt hear of it and the boys left home sadly the story finishes there which is such a shame.
I had someone reply to another of my messages saying they could safely say that they have never heard of the name Benjamin in Ireland or at least never met one, so now i'm completely confused with whether the benjamin born in england is mine or not.
I will be ordering the birth certificate today anyway so hopefully it gives me his parents names which will at least give me some idea whether i'm on the right track or not.
Thank you for your replies once again it has been appreciated

Kerry
The fact that Benjamin was RC and his children were brought up RC does not neccesarily mean that he was born in Ireland, nor indeed that he was Irish, just that he was Roman Catholic.
Hope this helps to clarify things a bit.

Kathleen

I am also a Kinally, my grandfather was James Mckinelley(1863), son of John McKinelley and his wife Sarah, Brother of Benjamin John(1861) and John William(1867). The name changed to Kinally later on. That's all for now, I await your reply with interest.
