Brian Sean Kinal,
a reporter, editor and columnist for the Erie Times-News for 25 years before retiring in 2001, died Wednesday at his home in Vineyard Haven., Mass.,
He was 60. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y.,
on June 23, 1947, the son of the late Dr. Murl E. Kinal and Constance Davis Kinal.
He retired from a career in journalism in June 2001, and moved to Martha’s Vineyard with his wife, Annette Sandrock. Earlier in his career,
he worked for the Erie Press,
the Kettering-Oakwood Times in Dayton, Ohio,
and the Jamestown Post-Journal in Jamestown, N.Y.
Kinal won many writing awards.
In 1996 and again in 1999, he won the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association first-place Keystone award for best columnist. In 2000,
Kinal became a licensed private detective in Pennsylvania, and operated his own detective firm.
In his most prominent case,
he led police to one of Erie’s “Ten Most Wanted” criminals. Upon leaving Erie,
he was a dispatcher with the Tinsbury Police Department in Tinsbury, Mass. In 2002, he took the oath as a Tinsbury police officer, having graduated from the Police Reserve Academy in Plymouth. At age 55, he was the oldest member of his academy class of 70 recruits. He joined the Oak Bluffs Police Department as a special officer in 2003. In the 1960s, he attend Gannon University and the University of Dayton. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 1967-71. On Martha’s Vineyard, Kinal was active in the Roman Catholic Good Shepherd Parish, and sang in the choir. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, John Thompson. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his stepchildren, Isis Tara of Vineyard Haven, Mass., Coast Guard Petty Officer Corey Clark of Mays Landing, N.J., and Howard Clark of Avon, Colo.;
two sisters, Destiny Kinal of Berkeley, Calif.,
and Candace Kinal Hines of Essex Junction, Vt.;
two brothers, Lance Kinal of Findley Lake, N.Y.,
and Sean Kinal of Westfield, N.Y.;
his adopted son, Dr. Hai Kinal of Springfield, Mass.;
a friend of more than 50 years, Kevin McCarthy of Marblehead, Mass.;
three grandchildren,
an aunt,
three cousins
and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at
Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 22 Massasoit Ave., Oak Bluffs, Mass., on Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Michael Nagle presiding. Interment will be at the family’s convencience. A memorial service in Erie will be held at a later date. The Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home in Brockton, Mass., is in charge of arrangements.
