Re: any facts about where our name originates from
Dear Tim: I just found your posting on ancestry.com even though it seems you wrote it in 2001. I never thought to put Zena Coates Kimber in my search. Here is the (abbreviated) information i have; john arthur charles kimber (Jack) was born 11/23/1900. He married Edith Hibbard from whom he later separated. He met Jeannie Munro while awaiting his divorce decree. As a roman catholic in those days, it took a long time for a divorce to be finalised. Jeannie munro took his name and they moved to scotland where their daughter was born in 1941 in Kilwinning. She was christened Valerie Wedderburn Kimber .He stayed in Scotland until recalled to duty in the RAF. He was posted to west africa. Mother and child moved back to london against his express wishes. Daughter was eventually evacuated to a convent in wales at 3 years of age. Meanwhile he sent letters and gifts for his daughter as best he could given wartime. Apparently, the relationship began to fall apart. He was sent home from Africa to recuperate and met Zena Coates, Jeannie munro went to visit him, found out about his new relationship, blazing rows ensued at which time he asked for custody of his daughter, wanting to raise her with Zena. Jeannie refused. Moved to Germany in 1946 worked for the british liaison, then to france in 1949,then to the US in 1957 where she remained until her death in 2001. I, of course, am the daughter in question. I was always told that my father was killed in the war. Out of respect for my mother I didn't initiate any search until shortly before her death when i sent for his RAF record, not suspecting anything and was horrified to find he did not die until 1975 and that I had half brothers. I did question my mother 2 weeks before her death as I knew all information would die with her. She did admit all I have related so far but was still so bitter and angry at the thought that he wanted to take me from her that it was hard to press her for more information as she was ill and weak. I told her I loved her and i knew the war created strange scenarios so not to fret about it, but I feel really sad that she kept the news of my father from me. I miss not having had him in my life. His letters point to love for me. I would love to hear about my father and his life if you feel so inclined. I don't know if anyone in his second family ever knew of my existence.. I have photos of him with me, my birth certificate signed by him and my mother and letters which i would be happy to share with you. . This is all I feel i should say now as i don't know what your (or Ian and Nigel' feelings are. i hope this isn't a bombshell. I have lived in California since 1957 and have a daughter who works for the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. If this letter sounds a little disjointed it is because I am still reeling from finding your posting on Ancestry.com the very same day a friend of mine in France had been urging me to try and make contact with my fathers family. Especially as it has been there since 2001! Do you know if your grandfather had thalassemia (mediterranean anemia). I do and i suspect he did as he mentions an enlarged spleen in one of his letters. Needless to say I would love to hear from you. Most sincerely Valerie
