My grandfather was born Mar 8, 1888 in Soonchun, Korea. In 1905 the ship he sailed landed in Hawaii. He then took another ship to San Francisco. He went to school in Portland, Oregon for a couple years then eventually moved to Chicago where he married my grandmother Ruth Emond in 1918. They divorced and he remarried Bessie Lim on August 5th 1928. He then moved to New York where he passed away in July of 1966. I believe his parents are Tayo and Mary Kim but do not have any proof of that. He had a sister back in Korea but do not know her name. Anyone have any more info that would help??

Dear Granddaughter of Mr. Kim,

Hello, my name is Kwang Dong Jo. I am a retired Korean American journalist. I was the editor of The Korea Times Chicago.

I read your posting at internet by chance. I am so excited to encounter Mr. King Bernard Kim’s granddaughter. Actually, your grandfather’s Korean name is Kyung Kim.

I never met your grandfather, but I had interviewed with your step-grandmother, Bessie Lim Kim in New York. At that time, I was a young reporter who was interested Korean American history and I was writing the Korean American’s Chicago Immigration History.

I flew to New York to meet your step-grandmother at her apartment. I wrote article about your grandfather and step-grandmother.

I noticed that you post this message in 1999. It is 14 years ago. I am not sure your email address is still working. I hope this email could be reach to you.

Sincerely,

Kwang Dong Jo

Wow, today is my birthday and this is a great gift! I bought a book called Ethnic Chicago that has referenced some of your writings!
Unfortunately, I never met my grandfather either. I am the youngest of the 5 grandchildren and he passed away right before I was born. I heard wonderful stories from my father and siblings and have done quite a bit of research. I believe Bessie passed away in 1999. My father and his brother (King Bernard Kim's only 2 children) have both passed away as well. My email address is not the same but somehow this got to me! My email address now is wendi.kimperry@gmail.com Thank you for contacting me and if there is anything more you could share with me I would be delighted!
