A Needle in a Haystack....

Looking for any info on Rudolph Kilbert, born 1860. Perhaps from Newark, Essex County, NJ. His line of Kilberts is from Alsace Lorraine. He married Sarah in Camden, NJ and they eventually moved to Philadelphia. Rudolph appears in no census information. Sarah begins to show up in 1910. We know nothing about his parents or siblings but can id all of the children he and Sarah had. He is my great grandfather. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Rudolph and family are listed in the 1900 census in Philadelphia under the surname Gilbert. It lists him as born Feb 1871 and immigrated in 1888. It also lists children that obviously are not his and most likely these are Sarah's children from a previous marriage especially since he wasn't married to her until 1893. At familysearch.org you can look at his death record from Sept 19, 1905 at age 36. Gilbert is just a spelling variation of Kilbert.

Finding more may prove to be the hardest. I would start with the church he was a member of and the cemetery he is buried in to see what each has on him in their records. His marriage record may have some helpful data. There's the remote possibility his children's marriage records have some helpful data. His obituary may or may not have some helpful information. Obits back then in cities were usually very short especially for an average citizen, but I wouldn't assume it won't help; you never know.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania has a large collection of Philadelphia area records.
