Some of the Kilbane's you may have met in 1980 have passed away and others have moved to places such as Dublin and London but there are still Kilbane's in Achill today. As you are no doubt aware Kilbane is not a common name, there are only a handful here in Melbourne Australia where I live. My father, John Kilbane, came to Australia in 1950.

I am also form the cleveland , ohio area and am just beginning a search for relatives. I'm not sure if this is of any help but my mother, Patricia Kilbane recently visited her two first cousins (twins) in Achill. They are about 64 years old, Michael and Bartley Kilbane. I have their fathers name somewhere; he is not living. Their father was my mothers brother. His name is Patrick Micheal Kilbane (1-27-1895 to 1-23-1947) and he along with his brother Neil came to Cleveland (Late 20's). Patrick has a total of 11 siblings (Neil, Tony,Michael,Mary, Ruth aka Bridget to name a few. It tough to peice together because my mothers mother , Rose Mary Kilbane was also born a Kilbane. Her parents also lived in Ireland and their names were Phelam and Rose. Rose was also born a Kilbane. Patrick Kilbane's parents were Michael Kilbane and Mary Kilbane (O'Malley). Michael had one brother, Patrick Kilbane. I am aware of many Kilbanes in the Cleveland area. Neil Kilbane married May Corrigan. They have a son Bartley now in his 70's in Cleveland. I am aware of many Kilbane's in the Cleve. area and would appreciate it if anyone else has any info. Iv'e been told that one of these relatives(Mick?) left his family in Ireland in the 1940's and it was rumored that he started a new life and with a new family in Australia. Please write.....

Joni: I'm not sure that we've written to each other before. My grandfather and his family were from Achill. My grandfather immigrated to Cleveland, OH in 1916. I'd love to share information.

Hi Leslie: Just getting back to these message boards after being away for a while. My grandfather and his family were from Achill. My grandfather immigrated to Cleveland in 1916. He married Anna Esther Gannon whose mother was also born a Kilbane (Mary). I'd love to see if we ahve any relations in common. It is pretty likely we do.

Both my parents are from Co mayo my father is a McGinty from Achill who is cousins with the Kilbanes & Johnstons. Most of the families now live in England although they keep regular contact with Achill still.

Hi, Elaine!
Great to hear from you! I have a Mary Mc Ginty, born about 1832 in Co. Mayo to Patrick Mc Ginty and Mary Gallagher. Mary Mc Ginty married John "Sean Rue" (John the Red Headed) Kilbane in 1855 in Achill. He was born in 1830 and was the son of Bernard Kilbane and Margaret Mc Hugh.
I know these surnames are quite common in the Achill Island area and I believe some of them were from the Ballycroy area.
John Kilbane immigrated to the U.S. in 1863 and settled in Cleveland, OH initially as did many Mayo immigrants. He eventually travelled to Chicago and west to Juneau County, Wisconsin where he settled on a farm in Wonewoc Township near the farms of his brothers, Anthony and Dennis Kilbane.
Mary Mc Ginty Kilbane immigrated in 1870 along with her children. They joined John Kilbane on the farm in Wonewoc.
I would absolutely love to visit Co. Mayo one day and hopefully meet some relatives. My brother spent a month in 1999 in Ireland and spent some time on Achill Island. He had promised to do some research while there, but somehow never found the time. He did mention that he saw many headstones bearing the surnames of the families I am researching there. Do you know how one would access area cemetery records? I paid almost $70 a few years ago to request research from the Co. Mayo Family Heritage Centre. Unfortunately, the search didn't yield much beyond what I already had. Do you know if any area Catholic church records are available for the time period 1800-1860 in Co. Mayo? This would be very helpful. THANKS!
Joni
