I have relatives in America but none of them are Kilbanes! My maiden name is Kilbane. I now live in Holland but was brought up in Scotland. My dad was Tommie Kilbane from Cloughmore, Achill of course! Eldest of 8 children. His dad was John (identical twin to Bartley) and his mum was Mary Burke who died at the age of 38 from TB along with the youngest, baby John. Dad died at xmas 1999 a true Irish gentle-man to the end. My mum was also from Achill but was actually raised in Scotland, she was a Masterson from Shraheens and was the second oldest of 12 children!! I wish I'd listened more to all the family folklore when I was growing up as I can't remember much of it now. We were brought up to value our roots though and whenever I visit Achill I always feel like I'm going back to my spiritual home, it's a special place with a bittersweet past...can you imagine what it would've been like if we'd all stayed there...help!!

I am the grandaughter of Mary Masterson & Great Granddaughter of Patrick Masterson of Shreheens, Achill Island, Co. Mayo! My Great Uncle James Kilbane married Biddie Kilbane of Cloughmore! Her sister Mary Kilbane is the mother of Bridget O'Donnel of Glenco, Achill Island, whom I met in 2000. I would like to know some of the history of the Mastersons. patrick had married Ellen McNulty & had 2 children, Patrick & Mary, however shortly after Mary was born in 1888, both Ellen & Patrick died. Patrick Masterson then married a women named Anne from Co. Wexford & they had several sons. His grandson, Michael Masterson runs store in Srhaheens. But this is all I know of that family. If you have any information I would greatly appreciate it. (Mary Masterson married Thomas Kilbane also of Shraheens & they settled in Cleveland Ohio in the 1920's) Bridgett Kilbane Green

Dear Bridgett...where to begin??? We are indeed related through my mother's family, the Masterson's from Shraheens.Your great Grandad is my great Grandad too and I remember my mum (A Catherine who should've been a Cathleen..my Grandad was the worse for wear when he registered the birth... but known as Kathy within the family) telling me about her granny from Wexford who was always considered an "outsider" by the Achill folks! There were 4 brothers, one went to America, Chicago I think(Can't remember his name), one stayed at home(uncle Brian, whose son Michael manages the shop) and my Grandad Hughie and uncle Martin went to Bannockburn, Scotland. Uncle Martin died in the sixties from cancer(?) he had 4 children, he and his wife aunty Annie were my Godparents. She died a few years back...a lovely lady and a beautiful singer! Our family are still in close touch with their family!! Anyway my Grandad married Sarah Sweeney from Newport Co.Mayo and they had 12 children. My mum was the 2nd oldest and born in Ireland (in the house adjoined to the shop), coz they thought she'd be a boy!!! The family were: Annie(RIP), Kathy (RIP), Pat (RIP), Mary, Martin (RIP), Sarah (RIP), Delia (RIP), Margaret,Hughie, Theresa, Eileen, Michael (RIP). With the exception of Aunty Annie who never smoked and Uncle Pat who died of complications due to diabetes which he developed later in life, all the others died of smoking related diseases like emphysema, lung cancer and heart attack !!!!!!! I have 48 first cousins on my mum's side alone and we are spread all over, Scotland, Ireland, England, Italy, The Netherlands and the United States.I haven't met them all but we all know we're there if you get my drift and we are all proudly bonded together...there's a real sense of family in our family! I love it! I can put you in touch with my cousin Hughie (Oldest son of uncle Pat) who is really interested in geneaology and who got all the info from my mum when she was alive. I'll get in touch with aunty Margaret to find out if he wants to make contact with you if you wish to? You can let me know ... I've got to stop now as I could go on and on and on and I'd be hear for ever. Isn't it a small world Bridgett thanks to the internet? I hope you get in touch soon. All the best! Cathleen X

My grandfather Thomas, son of Michael Kilbane & Mary Cooney, came to Cleveland sometime after the Easter Uprising. He married Mary Masterson, daughter of Patrick Masterson of Sraheens & Ellen McNulty. My father was James Corneilus Kilbane, born in Cleveland 1921. I am looking for Michael's brother James Kilbane who came to US prior to 1900. wife was known as Pegsog. Both from Achill Island, Co. Mayo. God bless, BKG

Dear Mary, Your Grandad and my Grandad were the twins (John & Bartly). I am the 2nd daughter of John's eldest son Tommie. I have an older sister Sarah Marie and a younger brother Thomas, they live in Stirling,Scotland and I live in Leiden in Holland. My dad died in December 1999. He has three sisters still alive one is called Margaret and lives in Dunning in Scotland and the other two live in Blackpool, England. They're called Mary and Martha ( Martha is not in contact with us anymore). My dad's brother Pat is dead but has one daughter Patricia who we never hear from anymore either. My dad had two other sisters Nancy and Betty. Nancy lived in New York and has two kids Sal & Ann Margaret, we are still in contact with them. Betty had one son Sean but we don't hear from him either. The baby John, died when he was about two from tuberculosis as did my Granny, Mary Burke at the age of 38. I remember your grandad from when I was little, he and my grandad were like peas in a pod with the same startling blue eyes. My grandad used to wear a trilby hat and looked very dapper ha ha. I think your grandad was less flamboyant and more of a family man. I remember the twins Porthlan & Michael too. They were peas in a pod as well. I could never tell them apart. They both had the famous Kilbane "turn in the eye". My sister had it too but got it sorted. I didn't meet your dad or your uncle but they surely knew my dad! My dad was a lovely guy. Very polite but quite reserved till he got to know you. He had lovely blue eyes too. I'd love to hear how you are all doing. Hope to get a reply soon. Cathleen Kilbane

Mary,
I just read your note from 22 Jan 2009. Based on what you wrote that your grandfather was Bartley and he had four sons (Thomas, Patrick, Pathalan and Michael with Parthalan and Michael being twins). Thomas has only sons and Pathalan and Michael never married, I am guessing that you are Patrick's daughter... I suppose you could be Tommy's daughter-in-law. If you are Patrick's daughter, I know that Paddy died about 2 or 3 years ago. Now if all of the above is correct, then you grandfather, Bartley, and my mother Bridget (known in the family as Ruth) were brother and sister. If you still check this data file, let me know. Thanks
