I am trying to locate where my ancestor, Joseph Kidder, was buried. He died 19 Apr 1817 in Temple, New Hampshire. All the death record states was that he was buried in Temple.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kathy,

I believe you are talking about my ancestor, Joseph KIDDER, born Chelmsford; grew up in Westford, MA, and then he and 2 of his brothers, with their wives, moved up to New Ipswich, NH, and then he moved his large family to the next town, Temple, NH.

Joseph and Rebecca (CHAMBERLAIN) KIDDER had 9 children, 3 sons and 6 daughters. There is a mystery involving all 3 of their sons. I am descended from Calvin KIDDER, b1765 NH, who around Age 18 joined other NH families to migrate to New Brunswick (~1784). He was not a Loyalist but the others were. Calvin was killed in a boating accident in Feb. 1799 - one week after his only child was born, a son.

The oldest, Wilder KIDDER, was a "famous and animated Fifer" in the Amer. Revolution. He was in several states and met and married a lady in NJ. They moved up to NH and also lived in NY and lived fairly long lives. They finally lived in the middle of NY State, but no one knows when they died, or where they were buried. They had no children so they have no descendants.

Joseph KIDDER, Jr., fought in the Amer. Rev. as a young teen, and ended up in Saratoga. The problem is that his cousin in MA with the same name also went there as a teen. One died and one retured to Temple, NH, married and had children. No one knows which one. So, we don't know whether Joseph, Sr., had grandchildren through Joseph, Jr.

I've written to the Historical Societies in both New Ipswich and Temple, NH, and they were of very little help. I was the one who provided them with information. And, I've visited both towns, once, and visited one graveyard. There is no mention of the KIDDER name that I remember.

I can't think of the famous KIDDER historian at this second (6 am), but he once said that all or most of the KIDDER gravestones had disappeared in those towns. There is a monument to honor soldiers in the middle of Temple, and Wilder's name is there. But, his brother, Joseph, Jr.,'s name should be there, and it is not.

The information on Joseph and his brothers in New Ipswich, NH, should be mentioned many times in the archives of this Board, and in the archives of the KIDDER List.
