KIBBLEWHITE or KEBBLEWHITE? Castle Eaton connection.
I'm just getting involved with my grandmother's family. I have traced back to Daniel Kibblewhite b.~1796/Susan Greenawayin Castle Eaton Wiltshire. Their son Alfred arrived in Australia(Moreton Bay)in 1854, Married Ellen Wilson in ?1857 and produced a KEbblewhite boy, a KIbblewhite girl, two KIbblewhite boys in 1860 (D.1860) and 1862. AFTER 1870 children and almost all references to the family are KEbblewhite. My grandmother was born Harriet Alice KEbblewhite ~1871 BUT married as Alice Harriet to Robert Campbell SWAN, my grandfather, in 1895.
It seems that all but one of Daniel's children came to Australia, settling in Sydney and Tumut areas. I am keen to make contact with anyone researching my specific branch.
Does anyone know why the names changed?

Re: KIBBLEWHITE or KEBBLEWHITE? Castle Eaton connection.
My mother in law was a kibblewhite. Her branch of the family arrived in NZ in 1842 from Broad Blunsdon and Castle Eaton. The spelling change probably came about due to many being unable to write/spell their own names and the spelling was then only as good as those writing the name down, could spell it. ie birth recording, church christenings, deaths, census takers etc. This is very common thru English census records. Re: KIBBLEWHITE or KEBBLEWHITE? Castle Eaton connection.
Thanks Peter8624 Daniel Kibblewhite b.~1796/Susan Greenaway is as far back as we go. Apart from first-born male George b.1828, all the other children came to Australia after 1848. The place names you mention are rather comparable and one wonders if Daniel may have had a brother whose son went to NZ in 1842. I would have to agree with your spelling explanation in earlier times BUT in our Sydney branch (Alfred KIbblewhite/Ellen Wilson)there seems to have been a conscious decision about 1870 to change to KEbblewhite. The next youngest, William, settled in the Tumut area of Southern NSW where the KIbblewhite name seems to have stuck.

Hello, I too, have also been researching family history and have come across and can only track to Daniel Kibblewhite. Daniel's child William Kibblewhite, had four children (from what I have found) the eldest two were George and Emma KEbblewhite and the youngest two Daniel and William KIbblewhite.

Re: KIBBLEWHITE or KEBBLEWHITE? Castle Eaton connection.
Hi there..
George Kibblewhite wa one of two not to venture to Australia. The second was Hannah who unfortunatley passed away at about 6mths old. She was the First of the Kibblewhite children born
Alfred upon arrival in Sydney seems to of adapted the name Kebblewhite, and the children as they followed seem to follow mainly becuase of their literacy levels, in probability.
I have so far found about 15 different speelings for this family tree..
The children did as you say go different ways ..Tumut Sydney Newcastle and Los Angeles, but ibn later years were to return to Sydney for various reasons.
Daniel and his parents ATM remain a mystery but current research would seem to speculate that Daniel had a brother Thomas. If this is the case the family may trace back as early as 1496. However records cant be located at this stage to confirm Daniels lineage.
Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks Steve,
True, I omitted Hannah.
From memory only I think the first two of Alfred's children (one deceased early on) were Kibblewhites, then the KEB spelling came in and apparently continued.
There were a couple of pharmacists in the family - see NSW records that specifically lists Pharmacists. One in Wagga Wagga and later Manly and another at Morpeth out of Maitland. The latter seems to have taken on alot of civil responsibilities. Mayor, I think.
I must confess that I have only gone back to Daniel. My immature genealogical skills have so far stopped me at that point.
We were in the Cotswolds last year, unfortunately before we knew of the Castle Eaton connection. Additionally my wife has connections in Hampshire - Mottisfont and Ninschurch, both of which seem to be small localities rather than formal villages. A bit like Castle Eaton except for the Red Lion Hotel and St Mary's church.
You may recall that I purchased your Early Kibblewhites CD - Super background info - thanks for the hard work!
Did you know that the junior foundation member and later managing director, dying in 1930 I think, of Beard Watson Furniture was James Kebblewhite- My grandmother Alice Harriet's brother?
There's a whole fascinating history to unravel! Beard Watson furniture had plaques fitted to their furniture which is now mainly classified as Arts and Crafts Era. Previously Art Nouveau or Deco - Not sure which. There are some fantastic pieces for sale viewable online.
Lovely to hear from you - please keep in touch.

Hi Again
If you would like to drop me an email ,I would like your number to give you a call, and discuss the Trees.
You maybe interested to know that so far I have databased 8670 names on this tree, they are only our Australian line. and am always looking to update, especially with the advent of my new book which will include all Tree lines.
I can find no reference in any Will and Testament that indicates a name change, and evidence I have concludes Alfred changed his name upon arrival, and the other kids all followed suit.
My current research is back in Wiltshire with researchers trying to find documentation on Daniel and Thomas as to parentage and also Births etc, but to date has been fruitless. I think people have not researched Thomas as a relative as he was living in Broad Blunsden at the time, a short distance away, but both appear on offical documents relating to one another, and Thomas's with is present at Daniels death.

Re: KIBBLEWHITE or KEBBLEWHITE? Castle Eaton connection.
Hi Yes we had two Chemists in the famiy. The Morpeth Eli is directly related to my family line, and became the Mayor of Morpeth, his actual store still remains.
No research is immature, this is quite a hard family to trace for various reasons, spelling is one, but also a lot of females in the family.
And yes it was very interesting to find James as the Managing Director of Beard Watson, the company and building I beleive were sold to Nock & Kirbys in the late seventies, but to that time remained in family hands. The Building was located just of George St in Sydney, and still stands today. The Beard Watson brand was highly regarded and purchased by Government departments in NSW.
The family has some very interesting people in it and quite a few that influenced the way we live today. The family has had Troopers, Police, Ag Farmers of prominence, Chemists,Engineers,Smelter a Harbour Master, the first in Port Stephens, and also some Black Sheep but no convicts. Not to mention the War Hereos, one in the Boer War.
