I am interested in knowing where did the name kiah orignate from. My great-grandmother's name was Clara Kiah and she married Burrell Lane in Powhatan County, Va. Her parents were Zacharias and Nancy Campbell Kiah, and she had a brother Edgar Kiah. That is all of the information that I have and they seem to be the only Kiahs that I have heard of, I have not seen that name anywhere else. If anyone have anymore info I would be very appreciative of it.

Hello Neke, I am looking for info. on Francis Kiah born early 1800's also his family. You will find Kiah info. and people to correspond with on this family at St.Lawrence County, N.Y. also I have recently found some Kiah's in Clinton County. The family also goes under Cadier I think that is how its spelled. I will keep an eye out for you on the names if you like. Rl

Are you descended from the Kiah's, if so I hope you do not mind me asking whether your family is African-American or Caucasian? MIne were African-American and I have not seen it anywhere else, I do not think there are anymore Kiah's in the Richmond or Powhatan area. And the other county that you mentioned, what state is it located in?

Actually I do not have any info but I can research it because I am a history major and research is what I do best!! Being that my family is African-American in order to get the name they had to have been owned by a Kiah or the possibility of someone intermarrying with a indian, if it is indian. The plantation in which they came from still stands it is just a matter of if they still have all of the journals and property papers. My great grandmother was black and born in 1886 (free) but her parents were probably born slaves and Zacharias last name was Kiah so he probably was sold from some Kiahs somewhere. If you do not mind me asking what state are you in?

Hi, I am in New Mexico but I grew up in upstate New York. Kiah is an unusual name I think and thus far no one has any info. on the Canadian side of the Kiah's. I went to school with a Kiah girl, I graduated in 1959. My line that had married into the Kiah did have Iroquois but of which branch I am not positive yet, tho my grgrgrgrandmother was living and had a home on the Mohawk reservation. I know there was the underground railroad and most Northern families helped the slaves get away from owners. This is interesting. Do you want the web sites? www.usgenweb.org. then click on states project pages, than map of U.S. and N.Y. state. Next click on county selection page and then use drop down list of counties to select St. Lawrecnce county and also for Clinton County. Please do let me know how your search goes. Thank you, Rl

Hi, I forgot to give you my time period. My Sawyer that married Francis Kiah she was born abt 1828. I think there are two other names that Kiah used, I will look tomorrow and see if I can find them and I will send them to you. Also the Iroquois I have been reading all and everything I can get on them and there territory went all over the U.S. at one time and in the south for sure so maybe that is how your line became Kiah? Rl
