I am looking for anyone connected to Horace and Sarah Kiah in Maine. I have found them in the 1860 Brewer, Penebscot County Census with children: David, Joseph, Sarah, Thomas, Levi, Adelaid (my Great Grandmother), and Benjamin. They are all born in Canada except for Thomas.

Surnames: KIAH
Hello,

I'm not actually related to this family directly, but in the course of tracking down my family, I've ended up reconstructing this one. See if this makes sense to you.

Descendants of Horace Kiah

1 Horace KIAH b: Abt. 1810 Canada d: Aft. 1880
+Sarah POOLER b: Abt. 1822 Canada d: Bef. 1880 in Brewer, Maine

2 Sophia KIAH b: Abt. 1844 Canada d: 14 November 1908 in Brewer, Maine
+Peter SIMONEAU b: Abt. 1834 Canada d: Bet. 1870 - 23 November 1872
3 Sarah SIMONEAU b: Abt. 1868
*2nd Husband of Sophia KIAH:
+Mitchell KING b: Abt. 1843 Canada
3 George M. KING b: Abt. 1879

2 David KYER b: May 1845 Canada
+Sophie BAKER b: April 1851 Canada
3 David H. KYER b: December 1870
3 Lucy S. KYER b: Abt. 1875

2 Joseph KIAH b: Abt. 1848

2 Sarah KIAH b: Abt. 1850 Canada
+John VIGUE b: Abt. 1844 Canada

2 Thomas Francis KIAH b: Abt. 1852 maine d: 25 February 1906
+Addie RODERICK
3 Frank KIAH b: 1884
3 Horace KIAH b: Abt. 1903

2 Levi KIAH b: Abt. 1854 Canada

2 Adelaide KIAH b: Abt. 1856 Canada
+Fred FOSTER b: Abt. 1846 Canada
3 Joseph FOSTER b: Abt. 1874
3 Frank FOSTER b: Abt. 1878
3 George FOSTER b: May 1880

2 Benjamin KIAH b: Abt. 1859 Canada

2 Frank KAYER(KIAH?) b: Abt. 1864 maine

This information all comes from the 1860-1870-1880-1900 censuses of South Brewer.

From what I've seen, Fred Foster was actually Fred Fortin. And KIAH is actually an anglicized version of THIBODEAU! and Horace is often an anglicized Narcisse. So you may be searching for a Narcisse Thibodeau in Quebec. As they were living in South Brewer, I'd search in the Beauce region of Quebec, as that is where most of the French families in Brewer came from.

I can send you more details if you'd like (source information, etc.)

P.S. Sorry about the first reply. My keyboard took over before I was ready. :)

What a surprise to get your response! This is the family I'm looking for. I would appreciate any information you have. I have the 1860 and 1880 census and a record of the marriage of Fred Foster and Addie Kiah (my great grandparents) . I knew the Kiah name may be Thibodeau, but did not know that Horace could be Narcisse. My Dad (Fred Foster) says the original name for Foster was Fortier, but I have suspected Fortin was used as well. I know they were born in Canada , but nothing more. My e-mail is nelliepp@earthlink.net.

Hi Paul,

Is your grandmother the
"Annie S. KYER" who married "Ephraim TARDY"
in my reply above?

Just want to update my database with the correct names. I got those spellings from the 1900 census.

And, do you know if Ephraim Tardy/Tardiff was any relation to Edmund Tardy/Tardiff who also lived in Brewer at the same time. He was married to Rose. They adopted the nephew of my gggrandmother after both his parents died. Wondering if there is a connection.

Yes, Ephreme Tardiff (Tardif-Tardy) and Annie Kiah were my
grandparents. Ephreme had a brother named Edmund.
Edmund moved out of Brewer at some point and an aunt told
me she thought he went to Massachusewtts. I am still
trying to get further info on that. I believe my grandafather had
a brother in Lewiston, ME - He was from a large family (Pierre Tardif & Louise Begin) in the Quebec area (St, Henri).
It is possible Edmund moved to Lewiston.

Hi Paul,

Very interesting stuff. I have found the family in the 1920 census, which I can send if you don't already have it. I have Ephreme & Annie with family, plus Annie's mother Sophie and some of her other children.

I wonder if your Pierre Tardif is related to my Tardif branch, which came from Kamouraska to Lewiston in the 1870s. My great-grandfather was Nathanael Tardif, son of Elie Tardif. He & at least 2 brothers lived in Lewiston. My grandmother, Annette Tardif was born there in 1905.

Regards,
Brenda.
