Surnames: Kiah Cadieux Caughey cadier Thibodeaux

Hello All,
Learned this year at my grandfather's funeral that his mother's name was Bertha Kiah and his grandmother was Annie Kiah. My grandfather didn't know much about his mother except that she may have had Indian heritage.

Now I'm looking for more information on the Kiah's and the origin of the last name.

My familiy is from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and there were/are quite a few Kiah's from Dorchester County MD.

My grandfather's name is Garfield Cornish.

So far I've gathered that the surname was derived from Cadieux, Caughey, Cadier, or Thibodeaux. And some of these names trace back to Canada?

Does anyone know the history behind these names?

Stephanie Cornish

My maiden name was KIAH. My fathers family migrated to Michigan from New York and Canada. My gr. gr. fathers name was Antonin Cadier and they changed it to KIAH through the years. He was born in Canada and then migrated to New York. There was an Annie Kiah in our family but she was born in Bay City Mich. in 1878. There are many KIAH's, Cadiuex, Cadiers all through New York and the East. Yes, I have heard that there was some Indian blood somewhere in family as they lived near the Mohawk reservation.

Hi Stephanie,
My name is lyndsey Kiah, my great grandfather Thomas Henry Kiah is from Dorchester County, MD and you can check out my tree to see the info I have. I was die hard looking up family a few years ago but stopped when I dead ended on my gr great grandfather Gabriel Kiah from Dorchester. My drive was to find where the Kiah name came from and I'm very interested where you gathered the Cadieux, Caughey names come from. I have an uncle William Kiah that has researched the names and also contacted some upstate NY kiah's but back then, they denied any black heritage which we are. I know there are some Kiah lineage in Philly. I look forward to hearing back from you.

All I have found out is that the name Kiah (Cadieux, Cadier) is a French name. They originated from France as Hugenots to get away from the Catholic ruling, they landed in one of the Carolinas and moved on to Canada. My great, great, great grandfather moved from Canada into upstate New York. I believe, maybe on to the Mohawk reservation (just guessing) and maybe some one of them married a Mohawk Indian (who knows). I had a great, great, great, aunt (from what I can gather) that was dark like a Indian. No one in the whole family that I can confirm this with.
