Khoury/Corey

I am looking to piece together my own family history and can provide the following:
My last name is Corey, but I have been told by several older cousins that our name was changed at Ellis Island from either Khoury, or Khouri to it's current form as they traveled from Syria. My grandfathers name was Samuel Mike Corey. He was married to Mary (Bettor) Corey. Their children were John Corey (no children that I'm aware of), Michael Corey (children David, Michelle, Darlene), Joseph Corey (children Robert, and Jean), Bessie Corey-Thomas (children Eugene, Marion, Edward, Norman, Carol), Thomas Corey (children Thomas ---me---, Stephen), and Lenore Corey-Willey (children Donald, David, and Claire).
From what I understand, they came through Ellis Island around 1905, and settled in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. My grandparents Sam and Mary moved to Erie, Pennsylvania around 1950. Thomas, Bessie, and Lenore all moved to Erie as well. John moved to Florida. Michel and Joseph stayed in New Kensington. Samuel died in 1954, Mary in 1956. My father and all his siblings have died since.
I am desperately trying to piece together my family's history as I now have reason to believe I have another sibling who has surfaced recently, but died suddenly, and left two daughters with no history whatsoever on the paternal side, as this man (allegedly fathered by my father, Thomas Corey), was given up at birth for adoption.
One additional bit of information that I can provide is that my great-great-great grandfather was supposedly a priest in Syria.
If you are able to shed any light on this using the information I have provided, I would be forever grateful.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Corey

Surnames: Khouri Khoury Coury Corey
Hi Thomas,
This is the second time I see someone from the Corey family who is interested in tracing back the line of the family. Guess what? I am in the process of conducting a research of the same nature. However, the Khouri/y/El-Kh../Al-Khouri/Kouri is one of the largest families in the Fertile Crescent. This is the reason I am focusing, for the time being on the Khouri from the village of Saghbine, my hometown, in Western Beqaa, Lebanon. The great grandfathers of this family came from Maaloula, Syria and settled in Zahle, Lebanon in the early years of the 17th century. The original surname was Qaddah (Arabic for blacksmith, relative to their profession back then). Many grandchildren and great grandchildren migrated to the States through Ellis Island Port and settled mainly in NY, Mass., and Ohio. If you are interested in exchanging information on this, please feel free to contact me via email at fadi.khouri@rogers.com

All the best.

I would LOVE to learn more about the Khoury families from Saghbine! My grandfather's last name was Khoury and I know he was born in Saghbine in 1908. His family came to the US via Boston. His mother's last name was Raggi. My grandmother's name was Kouri but we believe that the "H" may have been dropped. Her father was also from Saghbine. I have my great grandfather's paper work. I would love to know more about my family tree I know there were still family members in Lebanon who would correspond with my grand parents and great grandparents.

Hi Roger:

My Grandfather's name was Joseph, his father's name was David J. Khoury. David married Zekia Raggi. I do not know of any of David's siblings or what his parents' names were. I would love to learn more if you have information to share!

Hi all,
As much as I hate raising this question, but it would be helpful if one would add the sect of the Khouri/Khoury/Corey family that you are researching. This would help in going back to the roots.

In Saghbine, there are two Khouri roots; one that belongs to the Maronite denomination and the other to the Melikite Catholic church. Even these two roots are related by inter-marriages, like mine for example.

It would also help if you could include the names of grandfathers, as much as you could go back as possible.

I have a script in Arabic about the origin of the Melikite side of Khouri family that came to Saghbine in the 16th century. Refere to my post : http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.khoury/44.1/mb.ashx

Keep on searching :)

Hello, Jason Corey from Boston, MA joining in here, I seem to be in the same situation of having a Khoury/Khouri to Corey name change, I don't know too much about my family history. My father's name is Robert Corey who has a brother living in Dallas named Thomas Corey and I can't seem to remember my grandfather's name as he passed when I was very young, I'll be back with some more information.

Hello Fadi:

My family is Maronite. I just know my great-grandfather's name. His name was David J. Khoury. I know that he was from Saghbine. My other great-grandfather's name was Fred Kouri he was also from Saghbine. His brother's name was Will and he had another brother who was high up in the Syrian Army in the 1940's? This brother's name was Nassary. Fred was also the secretary of the "Saghbeen Society of the US and Europe.

Due to the language barrier, I have not had a lot of luck finding any records of my family in the "old country. No one in my family reads Arabic or speaks the language.

If anyone can help me trace my family back to Lebanon and Syria I would love to be able to expand my tree!
