Hello Stephanie

Over the years I have amassed a considerable amount of data about the Kevan family.

There is an Alexander KEVAN b 30 Apr 1898 m Georgina GILMOUR b 6 Nov 1903

You do not mention you Grandmother's Christian name please fill me in. My research goes back several generations as well as sideways.
If you are related to Alexander KEVAN we too are distantly related. Small world! Alison, also posting messages on this message board and I are 3rd cousins once removed. Fortunately Family Tree Maker programme has a kinship report which works out relationships.

Hi Alison

The brick wall you have hit is because the John KEVAN b 1810 is not the correct John KEVAN in our family tree. You may not have come across the other spelling of the KEVAN name. John KEVAND b 29 May 1798 Minnigaff KDS OPR fits in with the following in the 1881 census

The 1881 census shows John KEVAN age 82 b Minnigaff KDS living with his son Samuel KEVAN my GGF. His age tallies with the above John KEVAND and the details of the MI in Kirkinner Kirkyard which I have already sent you.

The spelling including the D occurs again with Peter KEVAND b 10 Feb 1845 lawful son of John KEVAND and Jane McCORMACK labourer Newtown of Baldoon. John obviously moved around the district as his occupation given on his death certificate is ploughman.

Having solved this brickwall some years ago the family tree has been traced a further two generations back. The McCARMICKS even further.

A Scottish cousin has helped me sort out the different spellings of names that we have come across Kevan Kevand McCarmick Cormack Cormick, Patrick for Peter etc. The benefits one finds researching Scottish records is that the maiden names of the women are recorded unlike English records. However the Scottish naming protocols provide a surfeit of John, William, James, Alexander etc down the generations. I puzzled as to where Peter fitted in. When I purchased John's death certificate it showed that his father was Peter KEVAN shoemaker. John KEVAND had a brother Peter b 1800 Minnigaff.

Hopefully this will help you through your brickwall. One day intend to journey to the land of my father's. Do hope that we will be able to meet up.

Happy Hunting.
