Ketcher Ancestry Research
My name is Doug Ketcher & my daughter Elizabeth has had to do a research paper on the Cherokee indians. Since I knew the Ketchers were of Cherokee ancestry we've been doing tons of reasearh on the net concerning them. Far as I can gather our lineage goes about; John Ketcher/Laura Bell Hughes, Jefferson Ketcher/Susan Bradford, Richard Tickaneesky (Ketcher)/Susie, Tickaneesky Still/Sue Eaksey, George Still/Catheron Downing, which takes us back to the 1770s. I'm not 100% sure on this, so if anyone has heard/knows something different, I'd love to hear it. Also, I'm looking into 1). Is there any other info out there that goes back past George Still (indian or other wise? 2). Are there any European ancestry that merge into the indian side past the 1770s? 3). Why the Stills/Tickaneeskys changed their names to Ketcher and 4). Why they moved to Okla. I believe they originally lived in Georgia/NC area. Did they come on the Trail of Tears? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I hope I hear back from anyone!!!! Thanks - Doug K. ( dketcher2002@yahoo.com)

Re: Ketcher Ancestry Research
Hello, i saw you have info on George Still/Catherine Downing. Do you know if Nannie (Still) Daniel, is there daughter? I found a place that had George Still as a "possible" Father and another place that says he "might" have been married to a Catherine Downing, but nothing for sure. Any info will be greatly appreciated! Patty

No I sure don't have her. I don't have much on the other children of Catherine. I will keep my eyes open. :)

Re: Ketcher Ancestry Research
I don't know all the answers to your questions but as a Ketcher I do know where the family name of Ketcher originated...atleast for my family. Years and years ago my grandfather's family were listed on something the American government called "A Roll Call." The people who were put on this "Roll Call" or list, were full-blooded Cherokee Indians who the government were putting on reservations. My family ended up with the name Ketcher when the government shortened the tribe leader name from "Catcher-cutting-deer" to Ketcher. I can't explain the spelling but I have heard this story since I was a small child. My grandfather's name appears on a "Roll Call" list. Hope I helped. Jaye Deen Navo

Re: Ketcher Ancestry Research
Kathy, could you also send me your Ketcher ancestor chart? As noted in the other thread regarding Johnson Ketcher, I am researching this line as well and you would save me literally days and weeks worth of research!
Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Ketcher Ancestry Research
Kathy... I would be interested in any information you have on the descendants of Jefferson and Susie Ketcher. Also, any info you have on Susie's ancestors. I believe her father was related to my Bradford line and would like to compare notes.

Re: Ketcher Ancestry Research
Jaye Deen, I really hope you can help me because I am so confused!
Okay, here it goes...
Quahlate or Qualate was my husband's great great grandfather as follows:
My husband, Jack Bucket
My husband's father: Charles Lee Buckett
My husband's grandmother: Gladys Qualate Buckett
My husband's Great Grandparents: Houston "Poppy" Qualate and Bertha Crawford Qualate
My husband's Great great grandparents: "John" Quahlate or Qualate (first name given to him by the government as he only went by the name of Quahlate) and Nancy "Nannie" Muskrat.
In Claude Hanna's book, Claude noted that Quahlate was actually his step-grandfather as his own biological mother died when Claude was very young and his father remarried to a woman named Nancy Ketcher. So Nancy Ketcher was the daughter of Quahlate somehow and was the sister to Johnson Ketcher.
To confirm that Nancy and Johnson were siblings, I have reference where Claude Hanna noted in his book that his father and his brother in law, Johnson, went to locate some vacant land for his family's allotment. The next morning after they were there and feeding their teams, the Hanna's tenant brought out a bale of prairie hay and broke it. Claude's father took a block and showed it to Johnson saying, "Now Johnson, this is prairie hay that I have been telling you about". Johnson took the hay and examined it carefully and then said, "Huh! Looks to me just like old greass and weeds."
The Ketcher School was built on Johnson's land therefore receiving its' name. The school was built in 1905 and was designated as an Indian school although all were welcome.
I have some cemetery information that the Heritage Center found for me and have found the following:
Johnson Ketcher was buried in the Buckett cemetery (not fenced or maintained) with Dorce Buckett, Aggie Buckett, Dave Buckett, Lee Ketcher, and Sarah Ratliff. (Note: Aggie was married to Rev. Dave Buckett and was the mother of Grover Buckett who married Gladys Qualate - Grover and Gladys being my husband's grandparents)
I have to conclude that the Ketcher and Qualate families tie in together somehow and just can't find the link. Does this tie into anything you know or information you might have? Do you have the Ketcher family tree that is noted in this thread? And why was Johnson Ketcher buried in the Buckett family cemetery?
Ugh... what to do you do when you are a genealogy addict and come to a dead end LOL?!
Bet you're sorry you asked if you could help now!
Thanks for anything you can provide me....

Re: Ketcher Ancestry Research
Dana, I think I can find your answer regarding Nancy Ketcher. She is alive and I can put you in contact with her great-granddaughter, Jamie Geist. You can contact her on this web (Ancestry.com) or at JGEIST3051@msn.com. You might find info at www.familysearch.org too. When my father died my mom gave me a bunch of old family pictures (Johnson Ketcher, etc.) so perhaps I can find Nancy in them. I will ask my mom if she knows why Johnson was buried with the Bucketts. I thought he was somewhere else. If so, I will let you know. Hope this helps..let me know what you find out, please. Jaye Deen
