Ketchams of Seaford or Babylon, Long Island

I'm trying to trace living relatives or information on William Edward Ketcham. He lived in Seaford for many years but his last known address, from the 1930, census was on Frederick Avenue, Babylon, NY. He was married to Margaret in 1915 and had at least one daughter, Helen born July 1919. Any help on this or any of William's relatives in the Seaford area will be greatly appreciated.

I have a William Ketcham who was married to Carrie Verity, daughter of Sarah Francis Wanser and Edward Verity. The William I have had a son George.
I do have other Ketcham's but they are in the Gildersleeve line of the Wanser/Rhodes Family. I recieved a note from Ancestry that you were researching John Henry Wanser in the 1880 census, he is one of my husbands ancestors. I have done quite a bit of research and would be glad to share whatever will help.

Thanks for the reply. The William Ketcham you mention is my Great-grandfather and 'George' is my Grandfather. I've already been able to trace the line back to Edward Ketcham whom is believed to be the first Ketcham in America. William Henry Ketcham was George's brother. I'm trying to see where his line goes into the future.
I would like some information on the Wansers. I've traced them back to John Henry Wanser's Grandfather, Daniel (1797 - 1878). Do you have any further information there? I'm trying to find who brought the name to the U.S. from Europe.

Thanks!

Welcome to the search for the elusive Daniel Wanser! A great many of the cousins (and in laws) have searched for years, with little to no results. Oral history says the line is down from Jan Wanshear. Jan came over with the dutch in the 1600s. He had several sons and daughters. As of 2009, none of us have been able to break through this wall in order to do a direct connect. Daniel's marriage records spell the name Wandsor. I can tell you he was married a second time to Catherine Wanser, with her he had two daughters Susan and Catherine. I was in touch with some of these descendents, but they also just hit a wall with Daniel. I do no he was a gatekeeper and when he died the town turned out to bury him. Where I don't know, that was not listed in the newspaper clipping. All records say he was born in New York, but state boundaries have long changed.I have tried to expand into Conn. and New Jersey. There are a few clues, such as my husband's grandfather always telling his daughters that the DAR would NEVER allow them to belong. That his family had been loyalists.
Have you seen the old maps of the Long Island that show Wanser Island, and Wanser Thatch Fields?

Wow, I didn't realize the hunt for Daniel was so immense! I haven't seen much of the old maps regarding the Wanser name locations. The only thing I'm familiar with is "Wanser Lane" that my Mother's house was on when she grew up in Seaford. She was surprised to learn we had ancestors who were Wansers. I've been very fortunate in that the 'Ketcham' and 'Verity lines of my family are well documented.

My husband's mother lived for a few years on Wanser Lane. He
name was Doris Wanser, she was one of four daughters of Townsend Wanser, who was a son of John Henry. Her sisters were Mildred, Madline, and Helen. One brother Arthur. He died in the 60s, Aunt Madeline remained in Seaford and married Albert Wilkening, Aunt Mildred married Fred Richter and Aunt Helen married Jarl Lindem. My mother in law married Thomas Kennedy. My husband attended school in Seaford/Ammityville in his early years.I do have photos of Walter Wanser and his wife, be glad to send them to you. They are very formally posed, circa late 1800s. I can't wait to tell my husband I found another of his Wanser relatives. My email is:kennedd@aol.com

Your surname, you last name comes from your male ancestors. What was your grandfather's name? Your grandmother Rosemary would have had another surname. Her last name came from her marriage to your grand father.

In the 1930 census there were 23 Ketcham families living in Babylon, 28 Ketcham families living in Amityville, and 8 Ketcham families living in Islip. All together there were 101 Ketcham families living in Suffolk County alone. So you can see some more detail is needed to help you.

Can you ask your father or grandmother for more information?
