I can't find diddly squat on my great, great grandmother's family and am hoping that someone might have run across her name in researching their Ketchapaw/Ketchabaw family to help me make a connection.

Specifically, I'm looking for the parents of Elizabeth Ketchapaw(baw). According to what I've found, she was born in Belleville, Hastings, Canada on 17 Apr 1817.

She married Thomas Campbell in 1832 and then married Daniel Force in Canada in 1836. They lived in Wisconsin until Daniel's death in 1884, after which Elizabeth moved back to Canada and died in Desoronto in 1886.

If this name rings a bell with anyone, I would be so grateful for any information you might have on the family!

Thanks in advance!

Kathy

Hello Kathy: Robert Campbell, first husband of Elizabeth Ketchepaw, is a brother of my ancestor, Rev. Thomas Campbell. Robert Campbell Bachelor & Elizabeth daughter of John Ketchapaw spinster both of the Township of Thurlow, were married by license on Wednesday the 18th day of January 1832. Thos. Campbell Rector. Edward Ketchapaw, Thos. Hall witnesses.

Two children: Margaret Campbell (1833-1910) and Eliza Campbell (1835-xxxx)were born of this marriage, but I notice that a Wisconsin census has their surnames as Force.

Any possibility you may be descended from either of these two women? Judith Giffin, Halifax, Nova Scotia. JFGiffin@eastlink.ca

Surnames: Ketchapaw, Force, Campbell
Hi Judith --

Sorry for the delay in response. I just saw this message.

I descend from Margaret's and Eliza's half-sister,Welthy Force (daughter of Daniel Force & Elizabeth).

To date, I still haven't found out anything additional about Elizabeth or the Ketchapaw family. I would love to find out where Elizabeth is buried. It all still remains a mystery.

Kathy

Hi Kathy: From my notes:

Back in Canada

"Elizabeth (Ketchepaw, Campbell) Force died 22 December 1886, age 67, at Deseronto, Hastings County, Ontario, after an eleven day bout of pneumonia. She was a Methodist. The informant was a William H. Britton, labourer of Deseronto, [Source: Ontario, Canada, Deaths, 1869-1938] and most probably her son-in-law, the husband of Elizabeth (Force) Britton.

We know that the William Britton family was living in Deseronto, Hastings East, Ontario, as of the 1891 Canada Census, as follows: William Britton, age 36, born U. S., parents born England, Methodist, brickmaker; Elizabeth Britton, wife, age 34, born U. S., parents born Canada; Pearl Britton, daughter, age 7, born U. S., parents born U. S., Methodist.

By the 1900 U. S. Census for Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin, Elisabeth Brittan [sic], age 42, born June 1857, divorced, and her daughter Pearl Brittan [sic], age 16, born May 1884, were boarding with a Clark family."

I have a lovely photo of Wealthy (Force) Paddock, probably from a web site to which you contributed. Sometimes I get lazy and attribute info to just "internet contributor(s)." You are no doubt also familiar with the "History of Sauk County" with all its info on the Paddock family. My e-mail for correspondence is JFGiffin@eastlink.ca.

If you found Welthy's photo on "My Twisted Limbs," that's my blog site. I love that photo!

Since I posted, I found Elizabeth in the 1885 Baraboo, WI state census, which makes me wonder if she was visiting her daughter in Canada in 1886 (as opposed to having moved there after her husband's death).

I found somebody's website who claimed that Elizabeth is buried in the "Mohawk Burying Ground" in Hastings, but I haven't been able to substantiate that and calls to churches up there haven't turned up any information.

The suspicion that she may have just been visiting Canada makes me wonder if she might have been brought back to Wisconsin for burial, but I don't find a record of her being buried with her husband (though those cemetery records are scant) and the cemetery where her daughter, Elizabeth, is buried in Baraboo has been recorded and she doesn't show up there, either. I need to check the Baraboo paper to see if an obituary might have been added there, I guess.

I would love to be able to solve these mysteries. Gotta love a challenge.
