I am always interested in the Keogan name. It seems that they originated in County Cavan or County Meath, Ireland. How do you pronounce it? I would love to know the origin of the name.

Early Gaelic did not have a K in its alphabet. I have seen the name as K'Eogan in one early document. I have suspicions that the name was originally Eogan with Mac added, then later dropped except for the K sound. Eogan is pronounced as "yogan" so add the K and it sounds like Kyogan. That is the pronounciation in County Cavan. My cousin visited Virginia, Co. Cavan where some of them still live. Decendants of Christopher Keogan. My ggrandfather. See the Irish records on this web site for the records of "Knocktemple Old Cemetery".

Hi Dara,

I just discovered this family name and am interested to see if there are any connections to Bridget Keogan.

She married William Gay. Bridget's mother's name was Mary Fitzpatrick.

Thanks, Karen

Hi. My name is Jim (james) Keogan. My family moved to Canada in 1967. My fathers name was James Keogan as well. The famil;y lived in Dublin (St. Anne's avenue North Dublin) I still have relatives there but have long ago lost contact with them. Maybe we are related. Who was your grandfather? My father was a baker and worked on Irish shipping, and bakeries around Dublin.

I'm not sure. My ggrandmother was Margaret Keogan married to Michael Coyle. They had a son named Patrick (b 1830 - Caven Co). I believe Margaret and Patrick came to America about 1850 after Michael died.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Beth
