KEOGAN of Counties Cavan and Meath

Surnames: KEOGAN
I have been researching the KEOGAN name since it seems to be an unusual spelling. Gaelic did not have a K, so I assumed that the family had immigrated from somewhere else, maybe Scotland or England.

The earliest date I have come up with is 1721 for the birth of Henry Keogan, his marriage in 1742 and the birth of son, Peter in 1744 all in Kilconnigan, Co. Meath.

The "Flax Growers List" of 1796 has several KEOGANs (Peter - from above?, Thomas, Patrick, two Philips and two James). They were all from County Cavan and County Meath. The linen industry flourished in that area - along the River Erne and southward.

There was one KEOGAN that was listed as K'Eogan. Could have been Mac Eogan???

Anybody else out there researching? Would love to come up with something earlier.

Hope to hear from you Listers!!!

We have been researching a Philip Keogan, died 9-18-1878 in Chicago, cemetary monument said he was a native of county Cavan. it does not give age at death, he had a wife Bridget, daughters Bridget, and Lizzie and possibly a son name unknown. We believe he is a brother or close relative to out gggmother Annie Keogan who married Daniel Daly.

Hi Michelle, since you wrote in 2002 I have discovered that a friend I'm helping has a Smith/Smyth ancestor who married a James Kogan in Jan 1844 in St. Paul's Catholic church, Aylmer, quebec, Canada. This James was the son of Thomas Kogan and Elizabeth Smith of County Cavan, Ireland. I have checked the 1796 Flax Grower's List for Cavan to see if the surname Kogan shows up. Not as spelled, but there were several Keogans in various parishes, such as Killeshandra, Balliemakew, Mallycoran and Castletarrah.

I don't know if Thomas Kogan and Elizabeth went to Canada, but I think not. Son James was probably the emigrant.
So, have you ever come across a Keogan/Kogan/Cogan family in Cavan with the name Thomas, born about 1800?

Thanks very much for any help you can give me. Dot Drake

Hi, you mentioned Bridget Keogan. Do you know of any ties to these family names: Fitzpatrick or Gay?

What do you know about Bridget's son? year of birth? My grandfather who is deceased was adopted and I am just starting to work on our tree.

He was adopted by a wonderful family and was very proud of his Irish heritage. My grandfather was born in County Cork or County Kerry and moved to Chicago area. I hope someday to find branches to our tree. Any informations would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks, Karen

My sons' g-g-grandmother, Annie (Anne Theresa) Keogan, was born August 1856, daughter of James Keogan and Anne Watson. She was baptised at St Stephen's and married Patrick Murtagh there in 1880.
Is this any connection to the one you found being married at St Pauls in 1844? St Pauls is the local church where the earliest records were recorded for many of the Old Chelsea St Stephen's church families until St Stephen's was built. The churches are about 10 kilometres apart.
Thanks so much for any light you can shed on this matter.

oops sorry. Please disregard my previous query. Meant to cancel the query when i realized that I already have this information, but clicked "post' by mistake.
But have you made any connection to James' parents, Thomas Keogan and Elizabeth Smith(e?), in Ireland?
Thanks in advance for sharing any information you might have.
Carol

Your son's g-g-grandmother Annie was a sister to my great grandmother Mary. I also am searching for information on the family and have completed a lot as far back as James and Ann aka Nancy Watson.

Looking for information on Bernard Keogan b abt 1790, wife Bridget, sons Michael and Thomas. They all lived in Ulster County, NY in 1855-1860. Michael's gravestone says he was born in Meath. There were several more Keogans in Saugerties in 1860 - still trying to establish relations. Those names are Bernard (1824), Mary (1834), and Patrick (1835). Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
