I have been unable to get in contact with any of my uncles children. So I am at a dead end unless throught research on ancesty.com or go to the Mormon temple.

Winnie. Thanks for your assistance. I had wondered how your Kennas and the Hardings reached Port Washinton from Harbour Grace. I think I found out last night -- see http://www.linkstothepast.com/waukesha/newfound2wis.php#top
The 1849 route desribed in the article in the link was by ship from Harbour Grace to New York, then by boat up the Hudson to Albany, then by the Erie Canal to Buffalo, then by ship to Milwaukee and then overland to Port Washington. Note the discussion of cholera in Buffalo. This route avoided the rapids on the St Lawrence upstream from Montreal and Niagara Falls. Tom

Hi Tom..I have looked through all my stuff on Kennas and Hardings and found nothing. I also checked the Illinois marriage records online to no avail. I have lost my e mail addresses when my computer crashed but I do have an snail address for a Harding in Illinois and I am going to send her a note to see if she can help you. I will keep in touch.
Bridget Kenna married John Harding. John Harding had a sister Mary Harding. Do you know whether this Mary Harding was the Mary Harding (also born in or about 1831 in Harbour Grace Newfoundland) who married James Grady (1821-1882) in or about 1851 in or near Chicago? In or about 1856, this James Grady and Mary Harding moved to Minnesota. James died in 1882 in St Paul MN. Mary died in 1887 in St Paul MN. Her St Paul obit requested that Chicago papers copy.
Tom Ross
San Diego CA
tross666@san.rr.com,

Hi Joe

The only Robert I have is:
2. ROBERT Keaney - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 07 APR 1819 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England

His age chops and changes a bit in the census, 1841 he's 20, 1851 he's 32, 1861 he's 40. No sign of him in online census indexes after that, but doesn't appear to have died until:
KENNAH, Robert 78 Arb 2 Nov 1897

But you're more interested in Jane .... sorry :)

Looking at submitted records on the IGI it seems as though Jane is the elder sibling of a James Taggart, children of William Taggart and Ann Curphey. This lists the youngest sibling as being born in 1844, which may discount the Mooaney Mooar connection as, there's a will of Wm Taggart of Moneymoar at http://www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/twill/1839_009.html that mentions a daughter Jane. There are though a fair few William Taggart's about at that time :) There's a regular connection to Ballagilbert through the Taggart family as there is with my Kennah and beyond connections.

Only way to be sure is to see the actual marriage and christening entries for Jane. Unfortunately I'm no expert on this stuff, good places to ask questions/check info are:
http://www.isleofman.com/Community/Genealogy/Genealogy/Bulle...
and http://www.iomfhs.im/default.aspx follow the "research" link.

Regards
John

If anyone has anymoe information on the Doyle and Kenna family that this thread relates to, then I would love to find out more about them. Their oldest daughter, Mary Elizabeth (b.1900), is my great-grandmother. She is the child that Elizabeth was pregnant with when they moved to Birkenhead.
My Grandmother believes that Elizabeth (b.1881) and James (b.1870) had around 20 children overall, so there should be plenty of decendants! All I know of from the generations before them is that Elizabeth's parents were Timothy Kenna and Ellen Davis, and James's father was John Patrick Doyle.

I think that these are the names of some of Elizabeth's siblings (Timothy and Ellen's children); Bridget, Ellen, Dennis, Mary, Michael, Patrick, Susan, Thomas and Timothy.

Some of Elizabeth and James's children's names are; Ellen, John Patrick, Margaret, Susan, Mary Elizabeth, Eileen and Kathleen. But this isn't all of them.

I have found the 1901 census, which shows Elizabeth and James living with Mary Elizabeth in Birkenhead, with Dennis, Elizabeth's brother, visiting.

If anyone has anymore info then it would be greatly appreceated.

When I was at Salt Lake City doing research at the Family History Library, the authorities there said that anyone who considered himself Irish would not state that they were from the Isle of Man. So I haven't pursued the Isle of Man connection at all. In addition, a passport application by John Kennah's son William indicates that his father came from Offaly, Ireland. So I will try the other spelling of the name as you suggest because maye the h was added to the end to make the pronunciation easier.

Re: Kennah/ Kennah

Hi Del

My interest in Kennah is from William Kennah b.1813, Arbory. (census 1881). He's a gr gr gr grandfather of mine.

Here in the Isle of Man my research around the Kennah name points to Kenna and Kennah being 2 distinct family names. Often frustrated at being able to make any progress I found a link first of all to the name Kennah also being spelt as Keanah then also as Keaney.

I came across your Kennah, who died on an Alaskan ice fissure somewhere else before. That person had found a number of siblings, but IMO not the full list. Unfortunately due to recent hard drive failure I lost some of my research, but a quick look on the IGI gets the following:

William Kennah b.1813, Arbory. (census 1881)
Christening Wm Keaney - 30 Jan 1814 Arbory
Father Thos, M- Esther Kelly

Children of Thos Keaney/ Ester
1. THOS KEANEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 31 JAN 1808 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England
2. ROBERT KEANEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 07 APR 1819 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England
3. JAMES KEANEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 28 MAR 1824 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England
4. WM KEANEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 30 JAN 1814 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England
5. JOHN KEANEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 26 AUG 1810 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England
6. EDWARD KEANEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 13 DEC 1829 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England
7. ELIZABETH KEANEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 17 SEP 1821 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England
8. MARGARET KEANEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 14 FEB 1827 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England
1. JOHN KEANAH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 29 APR 1816 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England

I did have a look at the will of Thoman Keaney a few months back, which I think gave me some more siblings, not sure though atm.

By my reckoning your Kennah is:
6. EDWARD KEANEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 13 DEC 1829 Arbory, Isle Of Man, England

Hope this is of help to you.

Regards
John in the Isle of Man (NOT England) ;-)
Hi Del

Are you sure about your Kenna and Kennah link? My research here in the Isle of Man has Kenna and Kennah as seperate families. To find out more on Kennah families here you want to look at Keaney and Keanah, they're 2 other spellings of the name. There aren't that many Kennah/Keanah/Keaney out there, much easier than trying to research my Watterson's and Kelly's ;)

Regards
John

Hi Mary, I have not had access to Ancestry.com for months. Just got access today, and it has been interesting to read the back log of conversations among you and other Kennah family members. Still researching on my end with no additional information on our John and Margaret Kennah family members since the breakthrough to Kings/Offaly County, Ireland.
Warm regards,
Jill Kennah Jacoby

thanks for your note but I don't think my family is the same as yours. The Kennahs came from county Offaly and settled in New York State, US. Note the change in spelling of the last name. We think they changed it here in the US. the best way to do your research is to start working backwards with what you know. Begin with your parents and grandparents. Good luck!

Jill - I found an old obituary relating to John Kennah's death in 1875 that states: "John Kennah, aged 50 years. his friends and acquaintences and those of his sons,John, Andrew and James, those of his son-in-law Sebastian Froelich, also those of his FATHER, JOHN KEENAH, and of his BROTHER, JAMES KEENAH, are respectively invited to attend his funeral ..." If this is correct, we have his father's name and his brother's name. I know that a James Kennah lived in Albany also and ran a brewery so that probably is accurate. I am not sure if the reference to his father means that the father was also living in Albany at the time of his death! Quite a surprise to me. I will scan the document and send it to you.
I have quite a bit of research about the Kennah family who lived in upstate New York. John Kennah and Margaret Colligan were the original immigrants to America, probably in the 1840's. they had 8 children, including one son who went west in the 1880s. I have made contact with his descendants in Utah. I have a family tree on ancestry.com also. Do you think these are the same relatives as yours? If your relatives lived in Albany NY, they could very well be the same ones.

Sorry my reply came to you three times - my browser was giving me trouble. My ancestors have always used the Kennah spelling here in the US although the census show their names spelled as Kinane, Hamah, and even Kennady! Do you know the name of the brother who immigrated from Ireland with your ancestor James? There is a long history in Albany of a James Kennah as well as John Kennah, who is my ancestor. Maybe they are related? John Kennah came from Kings County Ireland (now called Offaly). he married Margaret Colligan although I have had no luck yet finding their marriage certificate. I'll give you access to my Kennah family tree if you would like to see what information I have. mary

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I know my grandparents always spelled their last name Kenna without the "h" and that is the way it appeared on the census report for the Little Falls, NY area. James Kenna was the one who immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1834 through Troy NY. He also had a brother who immigrated from Ireland. Does any of this sound familiar? It's been great talking to you, hope this rings a bell, it would be great to trade info. Cindy

I am very interested in getting any further info you have on the Edmond Duggan born 2/19/1832. Do you know who he married, where, when and any of his children? I have an Edmond Duggan born on 5/23/1866 to Edmond Duggan and ?. He married Margaret Regan on Nov. 10, 1864 in Solloghbed/Oola R.C. Chapel. They moved to Shanbally where they were living when my gr grandfather Edmond was born in 1866. He had siblings names Malachy, Mary, Ellen, Patrick, Michael, and John. Edmond came to America in 1892 and married Catherine Ryan somewhere in NYC. I cannot locate thier marriage record as I do not hve the name of the Church. I have been trying desperately to locate his parents. I know from the marriage record his father was a farmer and was deceased when he married in 1864, but was also named Edmond. Any help there???

Hi Jessi,
Saw your post. I was not able to directly respond to your email address. It was returned to me. How are you related to the Duggans and Kennas? Nicholas Duggan (born 1808) and Mary Kenna were my great-great-great-grandparents. They lived in Kilross a little place about 8 miles southwest of Tipperary Town near the Co. Limerick border. Have you seen my Duggan info on my web page? It's at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~eevanoff17/All_Fami...
Ellen

Ellen

Hey Cindy & CJ: Yes, you are related. Based on what I have learned about the Kenna's in Little Falls there were two brothers who settled there, James Sr. and William Sr.
http://www.kennaweb.com/tng/getperson.php?personID=I361&...

There are some documents that document a relationship:

They bought land together in Little Falls in 1839 - http://www.kennaweb.com/tng/getperson.php?personID=I294&...

James Kenna Jr. testifies he is a cousin of William Kenna Jr. - http://www.kennaweb.com/tng/showsource.php?sourceID=S88&...

Plus there is a reference to James Jr. working with his Uncle, William at the graveyard (I don't have that online yet).

Cindy and I are from the James Kenna line and CJ is from the William Kenna line.

Wayne Kenna
