looking for my 5th GG mother

Hi all,

I am stuck with my 5th great-grandmother, Margaret KEITH.

According to her marriage (18 Oct 1788 in Edinburgh), her father was Alexander Keith, tailor in the parish of Halkirk (250 miles up north).
Since she got married in 1788 and had children up to 1804, she must have been born between 1760 and 1770. I did find quite some Keiths in Halkirk in the 1800's, and also in Olrig and Thurso, not too far from Halkirk, but no Alexanders who have a daughter Margaret. I have spent 30 "points" on scotlandspeople, but no luck.

Some trees on Ancestry place her in in Nigg, but that is not correct since the Alexander there was a fisherman and not a tailor. Other put her in Edinburgh as daughter of James Keith, but the marriage certificate clearly says Alexander from Halkirk.

Is there anyone out there who might have a clue who Alexander Keith, tailor in Halkirk might be? And why did his daughter travel 250 miles south to marry?

Thanks!
Tom
