Hi John,
Sorry, but I think you are referring to my late father, Victor David Keir.
I am currently sourcing information and came across your post.
Dad stayed in the RAF for 23 years before working in the middle east and latterly on the North sea oil rigs.
He passed away in 1986.
I am Steve, oldest of three brothers.
Somewhere we have lots of airforce pics, I know he was with 111 and 74 squadrons with Lightnings. (I was born in Cyprus and we lived in Singapore as well.)
Hope you are well and would love to hear any old stories or see any pictures of Dad!!
Cheers
Steve

Hi . Have not been on Ancestry for a while now but the birth of a new grandchild has prompted me back to family research. Apologies...Robert Keir/Marion Balfour were my 5x Great Grandparents. I am descended from their eldest son, James (b. 1780) and his eldest son Robert (b. Saline 1811) . I had not followed the Leitch Keir line but am happy to pass on details of the James Keir line.
Maggie

Loads of Duffys buried there, and perhaps a few Keirs. My grandma is Susan V. TICEHURST (born Grenfell 1900), married to Mathew FISHER (born Parkes NSW 1898). I am still tracing my family tree down all branches.
Regards
Angela Cassano (nee McEnearney) of Sydney.

"Hello", Mort -- I, Shirley am from the "6th Generation" of "Our Very 1st Kier Ancestors" whose names were Andrew and Mary Mathis Kier, who came to Pennsylvania back in "1785" from Ballymoney, County of Antrim in Northern Ireland. You and I, have spoken to each other in the past, quite some time ago. "My Mother" was Rosamond Alberta Kier (5)" who was from the "5th Generation" of Andrew and Mary Mathis Kier. "Paul Edward Kier(7)" who made "Our 1st 380 Page Kier Genealogy Book" was "My 2nd Cousin". I have now increased "My Mother's Kier Genealogy Book" to 600+Pages, which I am "Quite Proud" of. I have a "Wonderful Cousin" who has been helping me do this "New Kier Book" since 2001 and we now have "11" Generations of Andrew and Mary in it. "If" anyone contacts you in order to find more information on "Our Andrew and Mary", you may contact me "Shirley" at Bolterbaker5330@aol.com.
KEIR Family - Perthshire, Scotland

Hi,

I am doing some research on the Keir Family for my Mother and myself. As far back as I have managed to get is my Great (x5) Grandparents David Keir and Agnes Elder.
They had a son which they named David also, he married Christina Kennedy ? I am the decedent of their daughter Grace Keir (Born 1826 in Perthshire) and I am also the decendent of another of their daughters Jean Keir.
I would very much like to know more about the Keir Family if anyone is able to provide me with more information, we would also like to know if more of the family came across to Australia with Grace and Jean?

Thanks,
Casey

According to a gentleman at the Museum of Tartans in Scotland, there is no Keir tartan, but their was a Keir checked fabric. However, that fabric has never been shared with the public.
When we were in Scotland we learned that Keir Gardens near the town of Keir had been sold to the Arabs (who already own a great deal of land in Scoland).
My husband's Keir line goes back to the village of Muthill in Perthshire. I have found the records through the Mormon library.
GKeir

I am just embarking on trying to find out about the name Keir. People ask me all the time if its Irish or Scottish and it baffles me, and also is disheartening to realise I dont know much about my ancestry at all. I really would like to start looking into this in more depth and try to trace back as far as posible. Any information you have and could give me would be so much appreciated.
My Grandfather is born Guy keir, he married my late grandmother Solange Eugenie Janard who was French. thats about as much as I know for now but would like to know more. If you could help me get started on this journey, I would really, really appreciate any background about the name or the family.

Thank you so much.
My family is the Keirs of Milton of Tulleymet/Logerait in Perthshire, Scotland. I found your family interesting that a Keir and Dick married, as the Dicks in this area were the landowners. Are you related to the Dicks or Keirs in this area? I would like to see if there is a connection, as there are many related Keirs in this area.
regards
Joanna Mikhail

My grandmothers dream was to visit her families castle, the Kier Castle and since she has passed I wanted to continue the search and possibly visit on her behalf. I am assuming that the one you found is the only one in Scotland. Do you know anything about the family crest? My grandmother drew it out for us when we were youngsters.

More about Keir Castle

To Sue Ellen and Sandra and all of you interested in Keir Castle.
I have stumbled upon this, which supports the local stories you heard about the cottages being constructed from stone from the castle. However it seems that this was not actually a castle but one of a series of forts or towers dating very far back in history, probably before the Norman conquest:

"The Word "Keir" is described as "a chain of rude forts, that run along the north face of the Strath or Valley of Monteath." These "forts" have been in ruin for many centuries.

In the Statistical Account for LeCropt Parish in 1796 the Reverend Dr. Robertson describes the estate of Keir like this - "These (Keir) forts are at present in ruins, and are discernible to strangers only by knolls of green surface covering a great heap of loose stones; but well known to the inhabitants of the country, who carry away the stones for building enclosures and houses. One of these forts was situated at the place of Keir. There are also Keirs at Achinsalt, at Borland, at Balinackader, at Tar, and in many other places of that direction, all similar to one another in respect of situation, construction, prospect and materials; which is strong presumption at least, in not a clear proof, that their use was the same." (Statistical Account of LeCropt Parish, 1796.)

The Stirling Family of Keir have used this name since 1448 when Lukas of Strivelyng, Ratherne, Boquhaumbry purchased the lands at the beginning of the 15th Century."

(note Striveling is an old spelling of Stirling.)It seems that Lukas's family was rewarded for supporting the Norman invaders with a title and income that eventually purchased Keir lands.

The castle was sold to an arab sheik in 1975 by William Stirling of Keir. I was advised of this when I was in Scotland in 1985 and went to the spot. I have recently had confirmation of this via the clan Stirling website - google Clan Stirling.

About the tartan and Lowlands/higjlands thing, have also discerned that at the time of the Jacobite rebellion the clans around Stirling were described by the English crown as highlands - possibly because they were Jacobites - will find the link and post it.

Virginia Keir Mitchell
Australia
