My Kehl's who immigrated from Storndorf, Germany c. 1853 pronounced it like our leafy green "Kale". But during WWI, some in the family deliberately changed the pronunciation to the Anglicized version, "Kell" in order to seem less like German's, due to the widespread prejudice in the US towards those of German extraction.

I was told, a great while ago, that the name was a litteral reference to the town of Kehl in Germany and ment "Farm on the River" or Farm Near the River". I have also heard it mentioned as to a particular voice trait. The village of Kehl lies on the Rhine River beneath the Black Forrest in Germany. I hope this helps,

My great, great, great grandmother, Sophia Kehl (1834-1905), named her son Kehl (Markley). He turned named his son Kehl (Jr.), and he again named his son (my father) Kehl (III). They have always pronounced it "Kale" and have always had to correct people on the pronunciation! I always wondered why those with the name (abeit the surname) these days pronounce it "Keel".

I always liked Kill pronunciation and I'm sure it's been said many different ways since at least the 1500's. I live in the Midwest of the United States of America. I would like to trace history as far as I possibly could. Have anyone of you Kehl done any DNA testing and I know we are very diverse in compare and contrast but that's just a good sign considering we've spread around the globe and adapted to all types of environmental variants. Please send me an email for fun or if you all know something. Please. Very respectfully,
