Kehl - Germany to San Jose, CA
My great-grandfather, Albert Biel, headed for San Jose, CA upon immigration in the 1880s from Oberaufhausen, Germany, mainly because a friend named Kehl had already settled there. Any Kehls still in California?

Re: Kehl - Germany to San Jose, CA
Hello, not sure if you are still out there 12 years later but I just found your post and wanted to tell you that My great grandfather John Kehl lived in San Jose CA between approx 1870-1884. According to the 1870 Census he was living with John and Mary Klee of San Jose, who apparently housed a number of different German immigrants in those years. John Kehl was born in Germany (some records say Prussia) in 1835 and lived in WI before the civil war, then moved to San Jose, then to Hollister CA in 1884 and died there in 1915. I don't know if it is the same Kehl you are looking for but I'd love to know!

That would definitely be the right time frame. Do you know where in Germany he was from? I'll be seeing my Biel relatives this weekend for a Centennial anniversary of the family ranch, up behind Livermore.

Well that's what I'm trying to figure out myself. From what I can piece together he was born in Hessen-Kassel Germany. I'm wondering if Oberaufhausen is in the same area?

I'm still here too. Your ancestor was probably part og the Germania Club in San Jose, which is still in operation after all these years! ANother one of my cousins interested in genealogy was going to contact them, they might be a good source of info for you too.
