Re: Leonard Kegell the Immigrant
I can help you on this as my maternal grandfather is a Cagle. The info I have on Leonart is that he was married to Susanne Unknown in 1717 in Obermehlingen, Germany. Leonart was born in 1684 in Niedermehlingen, Germany and Susanna was born in 1688. Leonart came to America in 1732 on The Loyall Judith. He arrived in Philadelphia, PA 5 Oct 1737. He settled in Montgomery County, PA. In 1737 he obtained a Land Warrant for 200 acres in Alsace Township. He is also on the Passenger List in 1737 on Billender Townshend; most Germans arrived twice; once to make arrangements, second to bring the family. In 1755 Leonart joined the great migration of Germans and Scotch-Irish from SE PA into MD, VA, and NC; Leonart settled in the Colony of NC, then settled in Moore County. His children were: 1. Karl Wilheim, born in 1722; I don't have a spouse's name for him. 2. Johan Theobald Dewalt, born 29 Apr 1728, died 1 Apr 1793; Johan had 2 spouses, one named Rachel Unknown and the other was Katherine Cockman. 3. John Dutchman, born 1729; John had 2 spouses, one named Johanetta Hart and the other named Catherina Seitz 4. Charles, born 1730, died 1801; Charles had 2 spouses, one Unknown and the other Mary Unknown 5. Nancy Ann, born 1730, died 1780; Nancy married Charles Bookout 6. Mary, born 1731; Mary married Jacob Eckols 7. Henry, born 1735, died 1802; Henry married Catherine Sides The children of these 7 are too numerous to list here. Hope this helps you out. Phyllis Price

Re: Leonard Kegell the Immigrant
Phyllis, My paternal grandmother was a Cagle, and I’ve also tried to follow the confusing trail of Leonhart Kegel descendants. Here’s some different information I’d found:

Re: Leonard Kegell the Immigrant
Two brothers named Johann/John married C. Cockman? John Dutchman - what were all his names - 1st, middle, etc.? And which if these brothers was "David"? Thanks for helping. John

Re: Leonard Kegell the Immigrant
Joyce, Thanks for sending that, I'll add the new info to mine. I have no other info than what I know at present; my grandmother did the research years ago - in the days before the Internet, the hard way! She searched in Moore County, NC for quite some time then later find her answers about his immigration in Salt Lake City, UT. Phyllis

Re: Leonard Kegell the Immigrant
Phyllis and John, Please understand this is not the result of my research. Lee Cagle is the compiler. I merely thought you might be interested that there’s different information/theory. I wonder if anyone has ALL the correct names, dates, and places of this family. As to having two sons named John or Johann - I’ve been told it was due to parents naming children after various saints, resulting in the same name in siblings. However, it does seem strange there would be 2 sons named John who married Catherine Cockmans! I think this may just be an entry error. I had the same spouses for the two men that you have. John, I think David may have been the son named Dewalt, but I don’t know. Please see the following database: http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mojo36...

Re: Leonard Kegell the Immigrant
Joyce - I'm not beating up on you. I've been frustrated by the lack of clarity on the 2nd generation of Cagles for a long time. Somewhere I read that Theobald was derived from the Greek and should be translated as "David". So, go figure. Perhaps others reading this exchange will step up. Thanks and be well. John

Re: Leonard Kegell the Immigrant
John, Johann Dewalt was know as "David" as for as I can tell. And yes the first few generations are confusing. I am still trying to get them straight. The TN and NC reseachers have different views, I think. Tammy
