Surnames: Kedge, Pikerand, Pightling, Danniels
Looking for information on Edward Kedge (c.1818-1908), and more specifically his wife Mary (c. 1821-1883). They were married at Mulbarton Church on 14 February 1841. The certificate states that Mary's surname was 'Pikerand'. Edward's father was Samuel Kedge, shoemaker. However, there is no information on Mary's family. Searches reveal no records of any Pikerand individuals in any census records country-wide. Have also tried varied spelling in case it is an error, but the writing on the copy certficate is quite clear. A possibility could be 'Pightling',as I saw a reference to a Mary Rightling married to an Edward Kedge. Census reords indicate she was born in Hethersett/Norwich. Any info gratefully received.

Edward's parents were Samuel and Hannah Kedge (nee Danniels/Daniels), both born around 1784/1781 in Mulbarton.

Dont have anything on Mary yet as I am still struggling with her daughters Margaret and Charlotte. Margaret apears to have had a daughter Beatrice in 1867 who then always apears with Charlotte and family as neice on census forms. Beatrice was my grandmothers mother and granny always said that Charlotte was her grandmother which would make charlotte , beatrices mother. But I have no proof of either posibility, or who in fact is Beatrices father. do you know of anything that might help me. many thanks Janet.

I have been confused by this side of the family too! Margaret Kedge was my gtx2 grandmother. Her eldest daughter was called Beatrice Margaret West Kedge- had her at age 19/20.- possibly her father was called West but did not marry? Beatrice is shown age 2 in the 1871 census (born Norwich) with her mother Margaret Kedge, as ‘visitors’ with the Burrows family. Margaret married a Charles Hipper (although I cannot find a marriage record), but was ‘widowed’ quite young. Her younger daughter Maud Mary (my ancestor)’s d.o.b was 1 January 1875, her father is recorded as Charles Hipper, cellarman. By the 1881 census, Margaret was widowed aged 32 with young Maud Mary and son Arden, also her older daughter Beatrice Margaret West Kedge (age 12, b. Norwich, 1869). Margaret was also sometimes known as Florence. She later re-married an Edmund Clarke (1826, widower and next door neighbour) in 1883, and had at least 3 more daughters. I can’t find what happened to this (Norwich-born) Beatrice Kedge after 1881, and she may be confused with another one.

There is also a Beatrice Kedge born c.1867 (but in Shoreditch, London), living with her aunt Charlotte, Margaret’s elder sister who married a William Windsor. In the 1881 census this Beatrice is shown as Charlotte’s niece age 14. In the 1891 census this Beatrice Kedge age 24 is still in this household. Beatrice Margaret West Kedge (b 1869, Norwich) would also be Charlotte’s niece. But this does not match up with the Beatrice living with Charlotte (the census states she was born in Middlesex about 1867), unless there was an error, so I’m not sure who Beatrice’s (Charlotte’s ‘other’ niece) parents were. I cannot find a birth record for this Beatrice Kedge on Ancestry or Free BMD- are they the same person? (although both appear in the 1881 census, one age 12 in Norfolk, one age 14 in London). This Beatrice Charlotte Kedge married a George James Hind and moved to Lincoln.

I received an email from someone who is a descendent of Beatrice (Charlotte?) Kedge. Beatrice Kedge lived in London with Margaret’s older sister Charlotte (1844) when young, then moved to Lincoln. Charlotte married a William Henry Windsor, a shipbroker, in London on 24 Sept 1870. Beatrice was living with Charlotte (as ‘niece’) in 1881 and 1891. By the 1891 and 1901 census Charlotte is widowed/head of household and running a large boarding house in Hornsey, Middlesex, then Stoke Newington, for clerks, solicitors, brokers. This person said she knew from her grandfather that Beatrice could speak several languages fluently and could play the piano well enough to play in Lincoln theatre and accompany famous singers. According to her marriage certificate, her father was called Robert Kedge, publican, who at the time of her marriage on 14.2.1890 was deceased.

Very confusing - may be worth sending for Beatrice Margaret Kedge’s birth certificate to clarify who her parents were (it is Norwich, Vol 4b, page 121, March 1869 quarter), better still try and find the’ other’ Beatrice’s birth certificate to rule out whether they were the same person or not!.

I think the person who you heard from, the decendant of Beatrice may have been my cousin Derek Benson, he is the son of Malvina Hinds eldest son Charles Benson. I am the daughter of Jack Benson, Malvinas younger son.Beatrice was Malvinas mother. I too know granny said that her mother spoke several languages & was a contralto singer, who sang & was good friends with Dame Clara Butt. We can find no evidence of this although all grannies stories so far have proved correct.Granny beleived Charlotte to be her grandmother.Derek cannot trace a birth certificate for Beatrice, born in Shoreditch.Margarets child cannot be the same one as she appears twice in different places in the latter cencus. once as Beatrice Kedge & once as Beatrice Margaret West Kedge. The plot thickens! Keep in touch with any new news & I will likewise. Janet.
