Have just seen the message re KEDDELL of Australia posted 2 years ago. I'm of the KEDDELL family of New Zealand and have been hoping to make contact with descendants of William Keddell seen in Victorian BDM indexes. My family of Keddells are descendants of John ( d. 1807) and Mary Keddell of Gravesend, Kent.

Hi! Well I have found that it isn't Mary FANNY Fanning but an index wrote her surname double on the register so its just Mary Fanning by the way. Anyways, with William, he was the son of Thomas and Mary Keddell/Kiddle of Kent I believe. Thomas was a convict to Port Arthur, Tasmania, Australia. So is William a relative? I am finding it hard to actually find his family back home in Kent. As his dad died in Victoria, Australia, his mother seems to have disappeared...

I had hoped to be able to help you find William's family in England but I've not had any success.I'm guessing that his father, Thomas is the Thomas KEDDELL who was drowned in Melbourne, aged 62, in 1855 ( owner of the limeboat Redwing ). He would have been born ca 1793 and I thought he could have been a son of James KEDDELL born in Gravesend Kent, in 1768. John and Mary KEDDELL of Gravesend ( the of Milton-next-Gravesend ) had 4 sons - John, James, Ambrose and Robert. I have traced the marriages and children of all these brothers apart from James. He was a witness at the marriage of Ambrose in 1795 but I've found no other mention of him. The 3 other sons are buried in the family tomd in the churchyard at Milton. I've searched the I.G.I. for marriages of James Ks or children born to a James Keddell/Kiddell/Kiddle etc during the time period 1780-1810 without finding a chils named Thomas born in Kent, Surey or London. There was a Thomas , son of John & Ann Kiddle christened at St leonards ,Shoreditch, London in 1790 and a Thomas born to James & Mary Kiddle 1795 in Norfolk. It interests me that the Australian KEDDELLs use the less usual spelling of the name. What evidence do you have that Thomas came from Kent? All the best . M.C

Hi Margaret, Yep Thomas drowned on the Yarra River. He and William were both limeburners. Thomas was also a convict transported to Port Arthur for sheep stealing. My great great grandmother was Lucy Rose Keddell, daughter of William. I don't have my notes on me for the Keddells so I can't quite remember why I said Kent. William was born in Salisbury Wiltshire and his parents were married in Dorset so hmm I am wondering why. I have bits and pieces of notes everywhere!! Thanks for all those lookups :D Very appreciated! Kim
