I have a lot of KEDDIE information in the area around Cowdenbeath/Lochgelly. Was Thomas the son of Samuel KEDDIE and Janet PATERSON?

First, I must apologise for given an incorrect forename in my listing. Once you have posted, you cannot change it and so although I tried to delete it, the message now has an incorrect forename for eternity! John's father's name is James and not Thomas. Do you have a James in your tree, married to Cecilia EWING? ? Lynette

I have a James KEDIE enties for that area who I have no further information on.

1.b abt 1851 Beath, Fife Chr 26 Jan 1851 Beath, Fife
Father: William KEDDIE
Mother: Margaret CRICHTON

I have no further information on this one other than that.

There will however have been a high likelyhood of there being others born to some that I have no data on as I have a total of 12 James KEDDIE entries in my tree.

If you want to see the whole of my KEDDIE line
( 611individuals) please give me a shout at dfboath@yahoo.com and I will send you the data I have.

Hi. I was a Keddie until marrying and my family were from Cardenden and Lochgelly. I don't know of a John Keddie but I have made contact with people who have traced the family name back to its inception.

The information I was given is as follows:

Adam Ferguson was the ancestor of all Keddies around the world. He was born in 1329. The Keddie name originated in Fife, Scotland and there are thousands still living there.

Adam Ferguson arrived in Perth from Ayr in the 1350's. He was a fisherman and always carried a canvas (Cannaib in Scots Gaelic). As he had nowhere to stay, he lived under the canvas and became known locally as 'Adi na Cannaib' or Adam of the canvas. Adi is pronounced aydee rather than addie.

He liked tha laird's daughter and she liked him but the laird didn't approve of their relationship. The laird was later mysteriously murdered and, although Adam Ferguson was suspected, he was never convicted. He later married the laird's daughter and in effect became the laird himself. The children were called McAdi (as was the norm - Mc being son of) McAdi became McKeddie in the Fife dialect and was eventually shortened to Keddie or one of its derivatives (and there are a few).

It is for this reason that the Keddies are allowed to wear the Ferguson tartan and they owe their allegiance to their Ferguson ancestor.

This was given to me by Steve Malley who is putting the entire history/tree onto GenesConnected. This was 2003, so it's probably there now. He worked on this for 20 odd years and my brother who lives in England met him on one occassion to get further info for our family tree.

Nice story! Anyway, maybe it's of interest to you. Kind regards. Linda Evans - Johannesburg.

Linda, if your KEDDIEs came from the Lochgelly/Cardenden area there is a strong possibility that we might connect through Samuel KEDDIE b 28 Sep 1829 Auchterderan who was one of my KEDDIE/KIDDIE line and a lot of his descendants remain in the area today.

If you would like to swap notes or see a possible connection please feel free to contact me off - post at dfboath@yahoo.com
